This will be a largely non-spoilery Doctor Who post.
Does anyone else miss RTD?
Yes, I am loving Amy. Yes, I am loving Eleven. Yes, I am loving the clever plots (except for the Dalek episode, which sucked monkey balls, and the Angels two-parter was underwhelming). However, I'm just not feeling much this season.
It's all very fun and the stories are pretty good, but it's all so detached. The Moff is just not dedicated to making the public feel anything. Amy's Choice could have been such a dark story, yet it was all kept superficial and spelled out. The Beast Below would have been a tearjerker in RTD's hands.
Not to say RTD didn't write some bloated, sentimental tripe. But when he hit emotional notes he hit them right. Think of Martha standing up to the Master: it gives me the chills every time. Donna showing compassion to the Roman family has me bursting into tears on every viewing. Even Rose's goodbye, over the top as it was, it at least struck a cord.
I have swallowed a lot of change from the Moff (new Doctor AND new companions - who I all love (yes, Rory too!). New theme song, which I've gotten used to and quite like by now. New TARDIS and new intro film, which I both don't love but accept. New screwdriver which I don't like at all: it's supposed to be blue, dammit!) but could we have at least some nods back to RTD's run? It's like it's a complete reboot: no mention of the past seasons whatsoever, COMPLETE overhaul in tone.
Come on, Moffat. Make us feel something.
