Summary: Matt never expected to be living in the 23rd Century.
Matt Parkman never thought he’d be living in Iowa, let alone in the twenty-third century.
If he ever caught up with Hiro, he’d give the guy a piece of his mind. Accident or not, being stranded hundreds of years after your time period was hell.
His special abilities were a godsend- Matt could read minds to figure out how he was supposed to act in this foreign day and age, and if he did screw it up, well he could wipe it from their minds. It really wasn’t ethical, but it wasn’t like he had his own personal Doctor Emmett Brown on his shoulder warning him about damaging the space-time continuum. Matt was on his own.
Everything was so different. The countries of the Earth had settled their differences for the most part- with a global community made up of united countries. The Earth was part of a group of planets banded together called the Federation. There was life on other planets- aliens! People flew in space- in ships that could go amazingly fast, part of a Federation agency called Starfleet.
It was not unusual to see aliens in Iowa, thanks to the Federation Ship Building Outpost and Recruitment center. Try as he might, Matt still wasn’t able to handle going into a bar and sitting down next to someone that would have looked at home in the cantina scene in Star Wars.
Winona was the one who rescued him. After they were engaged, Matt joked about getting a tattoo that read “Winona Forever”. She didn’t get the reference until he mentioned Johnny Depp. ( No one in this century had heard of Winona Ryder, but Johnny Depp was eternal, apparently).
He crashed into this century in the middle of her farm. It was a non-functioning farm for the most part- she grew a food crops, but that was for fun, not for profit. She was a Starfleet Officer. Winona worked in engineering, and lived on the farm when she wasn’t offplanet.
On the night he arrived, she was home. Matt was scared and confused, and she offered him a place to stay, and comfort.
And she was damn beautiful- reminded him a little of an actress from one of those medical shows that he never really watched.
Winona was kind and gentle; and hurting. She’d lost her husband, who had also been a Starfleet officer, in a horrific accident years ago. Her life was devoted to work and her two young sons- George and Jim.
Before he knew it, they’d formed a sort of family.
Matt had never been too good at being in a family. Maury had hardly been a father. He’d been close when he was living with Molly and Mohinder, even though times were tough. In some future, Matt had a family with Daphne, but that never came to pass. He hardly got to know his son.
But Winona made him want to try.
Matt married her in a small ceremony on the farm- her mother and sister were there, a local judge, a couple of neighbors, and her boys.
There wasn’t a way back to the past. He had to build a future.
Life with Winona went well. They loved each other, and though her tours of duty separated them often, they were happy.
From time to time, Matt tried to look up people he’d known back in 2009; to see what had become of them. The records were hard to access and difficult to follow. His son grew up and went to Harvard; but that was as much as he could decipher. People with powers weren’t news in this century; the stories of those he’d known in the past had been lost with the passages of time.
He was a failure as a father, like his father before him.
His relationship with Winona’s boys was a prime example. They couldn’t stand Matt, and he had absolutely no idea how to control them. George was independent and sullen; Jim was incorrigible and had absolutely no respect for rules of any sort. They butted heads with Matt whenever possible and went out of their way to annoy him. He had absolutely no idea how to relate to them.
Winona’s first husband had an antique Corvette convertible that she’d given to Matt as a wedding present. One day, before he was even a teenager, Jim stole the car out of the garage and took it for a joy ride. Winona was offplanet, so Matt had to rush to the police station alone.
The car was a wreck.
Jim’s face was stoic and angry, but his thoughts were something else. Jim was angry, scared, and upset. If just for one moment, Matt understood his stepson.
“The car…” Jim growled,
“Things with the car will wait until your mother gets home.” Matt looked over Jim head to toe. “You sure you’re okay?”
“I’m fine”. The surly preteen whined. “Can we leave already?”
“Yeah.” Matt answered. “Let’s go home.”
Author's Note: If you've seen the movie and missed it, Greg Grunberg does the voice of Jim's stepfather through the car phone scene. A crossover to explain it is how I roll. Some additional info for the story may have been gleaned from the movie novelization.
