Summary: Chloe runs, and Clark's there to pick up the pieces.
“It’s okay.” Clark called gently as he stepped into the barn. “Everyone’s gone now.”
He climbed up the stairs to his loft. Sitting on his couch in a no-longer sparkling white dress, her intricate hairdo in shambles, her makeup ruined and splotchy from tears.
“It doesn’t matter.” Chloe sniffled. “I’m never going to be able to leave this couch. I can’t face anyone. I’ve ruined my life.”
“Chloe, those who love you are going to love you no matter what.”
“I turned my life into a Julia Roberts movie! The footage of my wedding disaster is going to become one of those stupid videos everyone laughs at on YouTube. I’m an idiot.”
“At least you didn’t get hopped up on Red Kryptonite and run off to Vegas when you were still in High School. I’m afraid that this pales in comparison, Chlo. It would take an awful lot to top that.”
”My Dad flew in all the way from Paris, and even Lana showed up…”
Clark sighed. “Your Dad would have flown in all the way from Paris just to hear you read from the phone book. He’s concerned about you, but he’s not angry.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
“I didn’t get much of a chance to talk to Lana.”
“She was that disgusted?”
“Lois drank that much at the bar.” Clark sighed. “Trust me, Lana’s not angry, and Lois won’t be once she sobers up. Don’t you think Lana wishes that she wouldn’t have married Lex?”
“I really thought…” Chloe shuddered and gulped for air. “I really thought I could marry Jimmy. I loved him…I love him…and he’s such a great and reliable guy, and even though I could see myself spending the rest of my life with him, when I saw him waiting for me at the end of the aisle…I…I couldn’t do it.”
“I know this has to hurt like hell. And yeah, it’s messy. But on some level, it might be better that you realized this now, before there’s property and children and even more complications.”
“I thought Jimmy was perfect for me. Everyone seemed to think that we were perfect together- except for Davis…”
“You know I like Jimmy,” Clark sighed, “But I never thought he was quite right for you either.”
“You never said anything.”
“I’m your best friend.” Clark said, “And I don’t think I’ll ever think that there will be a guy that’s good enough for you.” He sat down on the couch and pulled Chloe into his arms.
Clark held her and didn’t pull away. He didn’t talk, didn’t try to look at her face. He was simply there to support his best friend. It wasn’t about him. It was about Chloe. And as he held her and let her cry, He truly was her hero.
Chloe’s tears slowed and dried. “I still didn’t get my dance.”
“Your dance?”
“My dance.” She laughed bitterly. “Haven’t you ever seen a Disney movie? The movie draws to an end, the hero and heroine are brought back together, and they dance off together into happily ever after. Sometimes on clouds, and her dress might even change from pink to blue and vice versa.”
Clark pulled away from her and blinked at her, not knowing what to say.
“The night of my Spring Formal, my date runs away without an explanation. I didn’t know at the time that it was a matter of life and death. Flash forward to Prom, where the weirdest of the weird in the capital city of weird happens and I get to be Prom Queen. I spend my reign being possessed by a bitchy ghost. And then I go and screw up my wedding, the one time in my life where my date is totally obligated to dance with me.”
“Does dancing really matter that much?”
“Maybe not to a normal person.” Chloe frowned. “But I left normal behind a long time ago.”
Clark sped away at top speed.
“See? Totally not normal.”
As the words left Chloe’s mouth, gentle strains of music filled the loft. Clark, still clad in his tuxedo from the wedding knelt in front of Chloe. “I know I’m not the one that you thought you’d be dancing with tonight, and I’m really a horrendous dancer. I haven’t been to many weddings, but isn’t it traditional for the bride to dance with the guy who gives her away?”
“Yeah.” Chloe smiled, “But that’s usually her father.”
”Even still,” Clark said, “Can I have this dance?”
“I’d be delighted.” Chloe slipped her hand into his. He led her away from the couch, and they began to dance to the music, a simple waltz to accompany the sway of the music. At first they stumbled, and once Clark stepped on her toes.
“Don’t worry about the steps.” Chloe said, and linked her arms behind Clark’s neck. “Just keep your eyes on mine. And step.”
The music guided them into a smooth dance. As the music played on, they became more comfortable. Clark took the lead, guiding Chloe at every turn.
One song flowed into another, and it wasn’t until her legs grew tired that Chloe realized they were dancing on air. They were still in the Kent barn, dancing in the open space where the loft wasn’t.
”Clark, we’re flying!”
“Actually, we’re floating.” He said, spinning her around, “Kara was helping me learn how to do this before she disappeared. I know it’s not exactly dancing on a cloud…”
Chloe put her finger on his lips to silence him. “It’s better.”
