Summary: Being Immortal can really make shopping for Christmas Presents difficult.
Written for the 2007 Advent Calendar Meme Request a Story Here Claire looked down at the small present she’d just unwrapped. “A gift card, Adam? Really?”
He shrugged. “Pardon me if I show a lack of creativity when it comes to gift giving. An average person, mind you, would have turned to a gift card long ago. After two hundred years of these holiday exchanges, I’ve simply lost the will to shop.”
“If you were a woman, that would be serious.”
“But as a guy?”
Claire rolled her eyes. “I have worked retail during the Holiday season, okay? I know more about the average male’s shopping habits than anyone should ever know.”
“At least” Adam pouted, “My gift card is a hell of a lot better than the same stupid present that Peter insists on getting me every year.”
“The Chia Pet?”
“Hey, he did try to wipe out most of the world. More than once.” Peter said, defending his gift.
“I did reform.”
“Eventually.”
“But I did.” Adam insisted. “In the end, that’s what matters..”
“Consider your Chia a form of penance.”
“Darth Vader reformed. Sideshow Bob reformed. And you don’t see them being tortured year after year with sprouting pottery, do you?”
“Boys, Boys, Boys.” Claire sighed. “You make me wish I would have gotten you both swords so you could fight it out once and for all, Highlander style.”
Peter and Adam grinned at each other, and said in unison, “In the end, there can only be one.”
“Whatever.” Claire pulled out two brightly wrapped packages and handed to each of her companions.
As much as she complained about their arguments, there was something incredibly comforting about being able to spend the holidays with people you could be yourself around. Claire’s healing power rendered her immortal. She had turned four hundred and sixteen on her last birthday; and in her life she had several identities and careers. She had loved and lost many friends and families.
Spending Christmas with the two other souls in the universe who could understand her as well as anything was something Claire looked forward to every year.
Adam smirked when he opened Claire’s present. “A gift card, Claire? Really?”
She shrugged. “What else was I supposed to get you? What can you buy a Wookie for Christmas when they already own a comb?”
“It was a mistake to ever let you watch the Stars Wars Holiday Special.” Peter sighed.
“You didn’t let me do anything.” Claire stuck out her tongue at Peter. “That’s on the Star Wars Christmas Record, anyway. Bea Arthur getting down with Greedo, that’s in the Holiday Special”.
“I find myself utterly relieved,” Adam shook his head, “That I don’t have a bloody idea what in the hell you two are talking about.”
