The facts were these: The pie maker, after hearing of Olive Snook’s most unfortunate death, had rushed with Emerson Cod and Chuck to the morgue where Olive’s body was being stored. Ned was surprised at the extent of his feelings. Though he viewed Olive as a friend and only that, the prospect of having a world without his perky pie making partner seemed quite sad. She was his friend, his singing, silly, exuberant friend. And friends were a thing that Ned did not have many of, at all.

To his surprise, he could no more easily picture a world with a dead Olive than he could a world with a (permanently) dead Chuck.

Emerson dropped Ned and Chuck off at the doors to the hospital.

“You aren’t coming inside?” Ned asked.

“I have the distinct feeling you’re going to do something stupid.” Emerson said, his hands not budging from the steering wheel. “And I have no desire to be anywhere nearby when you do something stupid. I don’t wanna end up dead of your stupidity.” He took a deep breath. “Call me when you’re done, and I’ll come pick all three of you up.”

With that, he sped away.

Ned and Chuck were quiet as they walked to the morgue. Chuck only broke the silence when they two got into the elevator. Perhaps it was the muzak version of a Celine Dion song that urged to talk, or perhaps it was an overwhelming relief that she might not always be alone as someone who was living even though they were dead.

“It’s okay.” Chuck said softly, “If you wait more than a minute.”

Chuck didn’t want to let Olive go any more than Ned did.

The pie maker acknowledged her comment with only a silent nod.

When they reached the door to the morgue, Ned turned to Chuck. “After I touch Olive, run.” With his powers not so absolute or easy to control, he was not going to take any chances. He slowly opened the door.

What they saw on the other side of the door was unbelievably shocking.

Olive Snook was sitting up on a metal table, clothed only in a green utilitarian cloth. But the most shocking part is that she was breathing. For Olive was alive.

“What in the hell am I doing here?” a frightened Olive said, greatly relieved to see her friends.

“Olive!” Chuck said, and ran to her friend and gave her a big hug, quite relieved to see her. “Oh, I don’t know, but you’re alive!”

“Yeah.” The non-dead blonde said with a sigh. “And seriously freaked out.”

“We’re glad to see you, Olive.” Ned said with an uneasy grin. It was then that a body on the floor caught his eye. “Chuck.” He hissed, motioning to the body at the floor.

“Oh my goodness.” Olive exclaimed, looking at the blonde girl on the floor. “It’s an epidemic!”

Ned leaned down to the floor, preparing to touch the body on the floor.

The body belonged to a young blonde girl who wore her hair in a short bob. She was impeccably dressed and seemed quite out of place in a hospital morgue.

Just before Ned touched her, the body flinched. Slowly it began to breathe, and suddenly it sat straight up with a start.

“Ugh.” The girl said, rubbing her neck. “That one really smarted.”

The Pie Hole crowd was incredibly quiet, all taken aback at the straight happening that took place right in front of their very eyes.

The facts were these: Ned was not the only person who could bring people back to life.

The girl in the morgue, Olive’s mysterious Savior, was none other than Chloe Sullivan, of a town in Kansas aptly named Smallville. Exposure to extraterrestrial rocks had granted her with the ability to heal any sort of injury. Her power came with strings; any such ability seemed to do. While Chloe could heal any injury, she could only do so by taking on the same extent of injury to herself. If she healed a splinter in someone’s hand, one would materialize in her own. If she healed someone who was dead, Chloe would die as well.

This is the story of how a reporter from Kansas became a part of the Pie Hole crowd; and also tangentially, how Olive Snook discovered the truth about the pie maker’s ability. And as with any good story, the end of this one is the beginning of an even greater story.
