In the end, it took a homework assignment to break the ice.
The end of the term was drawing near; and Pam couldn’t believe how weird it felt to be coming to the end of her first year of night school art classes. High School felt like forever ago, and even though her studies weren’t astrophysics or anything too academic, she was still very nervous about turning out the best possible portfolio she could.
These classes were the first thing that she’d done for herself in a long, long time. It took a lot of courage for her to start in the first place. Pam didn’t know if she had the courage to continue if she failed.
The final project that gave her the most trouble was interpreting a fairy tale with new illustrations. She’d chosen Sleeping Beauty, because she’d always liked the Disney movie. Slowly but surely the project came together.
Pam found herself borrowing the faces of her Dunder-Mifflin coworkers for her story. Sleeping Beauty’s mother looked strangely like Jan, the fairies who gifted Sleeping Beauty with various blessings resembled Meredith, Phyllis, Karen, and Kelly. The court jester wore an outfit adorned with beets, while the buffoonish king had started with a doodle of Michael. Stanley, Creed, Oscar, and the guys from the warehouse (even Roy, whose face Pam knew better than her own) were members of the crowd. The evil witch had Angela’s scowl.
No matter how she tried, Pam couldn’t get Prince Charming to turn out right.
One morning, while taking notes during one of Michael’s rambling talks in the conference room, Pam was finally able to draw Prince Charming.
It wasn’t until she got back to her desk that she realized that Prince Charming looked awfully familiar.
He looked like Jim.
That thought flustered her, and she started over again, but it just wouldn’t work. Now that she had Jim on the brain, she couldn’t get anything in the picture right.
For the rest of the day, she tried looking up celebrity pictures on the internet to get a different face for Prince Charming. Zach Braff came close, but no cigar. No one would work as well as Jim.
Desperate to get a good grade, Pam gathered up all her courage and cornered Jim near the vending machines.
“I need your help.”
”Yeah sure.” Jim said without hesitation. Seeing her face, he frowned. “Everything okay?”
“Final project for school. It’s…difficult.”
“Ugh.” Jim had been out of school for awhile, but not for that long. The horrors of finals are slow to fade from one’s mind. “How can I help?”
“I need a model.”
“Darn. I knew I shouldn’t have thrown away Tyra Banks’ phone number.”
“Jim.”
“Me?” He shrugged. “Yeah, sure, I guess. But just to let you know, I am in no way, shape or form, America’s Next Top Model. Hell, I’m not even the Next Pussycat Doll!”
Pam grinned.
The office was pretty empty- Michael had left early to attend some meeting at corporate, and pretty much everyone had found a reason to leave early; except for Jim, and Pam; and Dwight and Angela (both felt leaving early on the clock would be quite dishonest).
There was a toy sword and a stick horse left over from one of Michael’s shenanigans in the corner of the break room, and for the next hour, Jim stood crouched with the sword in the air, as if he was riding an invisible horse.
Jim was an ideal subject; barely moving, not even when his nose itched and his leg cramped. He did, however, complain about the lack of coconuts.
The picture came out perfectly.
Pam, relieved and exhilarated to have the project done, hugged the still vogue-ing Jim, almost causing him to topple over. Jim recovered quickly, and hugged her back, before they both realized how close they were.
Blushing, they pulled apart.
“I totally owe you a coke.” Pam said, and went to get money from her desk.
Jim picked up Pam’s sketchbook and looked through the drawings.
He didn't look too bad as Prince Charming; though he'd never really saw himself as that kind of guy. Lancelot, maybe.
He continued to flip through the pictures. Pam had based the likeness of Sleeping Beauty on an actress from the latest Will Farell movie. But to Jim, Sleeping Beauty looked exactly like Pam.
