It’s funny, for years they had been living parallel lives, never really interacting more than a chance encounter in the hallways at school, or at Wal-Mart. But she was always there, like background music in the story of his life. And now that she’s gone, the silence is deafening.
The official story is that Claire went off to some special cheerleading camp, but seriously- do cheerleading camps even exist outside of the world of Bring It On? And what kind of camp takes place when school is in session? It’s almost November, for crying out loud.
They bulldozed the ruins of the Bennet house today. Zach rode his bike over and watched from a distance. He’d spent so many hours there when he was little, back when the threat of cooties wasn’t enough to keep Claire and him apart. He stays and watches the house fall, until it is reduced into a pile of rubble.
He’s never felt younger. Or older.
Maybe Claire really did die. Otherwise, she would have said goodbye, right? The whole cheerleading camp thing is a book depository, another man on the grassy knoll level conspiracy.
Zach remembers watching Claire die through the lens of his video camera. But like someone straight out of Joseph Campbell’s The Power of Myth, she’d come right back to life. Claire Bennet had more lives than Super Mario and Buffy the Vampire Slayer combined.
And now she’s gone.
They’re still fixing the damage to the gym from Homecoming. He never liked Jackie, but hell, he wouldn’t wish a death like that on anybody.
It feels like nothing will ever be normal again. The world is going crazy.
Or maybe it’s just him.
There’s a strange feeling in his bones, like the pressure is building and the symphony is about to crescendo. Zach watches the news almost obsessively, hoping to see something, though he doesn’t quite know what. He’d know it if he saw it, he figures.
At night, Zach dreams of the end of the world. His dreams are full of Terminator robots.
Claire once hung wind chimes in her window as to signal someone she thought could help her.
The wind chimes in the corner of Zach’s window are a signal to Claire.
Maybe, one day, she’ll see them.
