Summary: She's in the middle of a terrible mess, and Jo doesn't know what to do.

More than anything, Jo wanted her mom. She daydreamed of being back at the roadhouse, imagined the feeling of Ellen’s cool hands on her forehead. A million times, she’d start to pick up the phone, but she always hung up before placing the call.

What could she do?

What could she say?

Ashamed and somewhat terrified, Jo put down roots, renting an apartment not too far from the bar where she’d been working.

No one ever said that growing up was supposed to be easy; but no one ever said that it would be this hard, either.

At a strip mall just outside of town, Jo found a copy of “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” marked down really cheap. The book was a couple editions out of date, but she doubted that many things had changed to make it worth the extra cash. It was one thing to keep her own self-solvent on tips and card hustling profits from the bar, but soon she’d have another person to watch out for.

Jo bought maternity clothes at Goodwill, and makes sure she takes the pre-natal vitamins she got at the free clinic. She wants to start off this baby’s life on a good note; and she’s amazed at how much she cares for this child, when it’s just a bump around her midsection.

One night she caught part of “Rosemary’s Baby”, it’s the late night movie on one of the local channels.

She can’t bear to watch it for more than a minute.

Giving birth hurts so much that Jo wonders if she’s going to live through it.

She forgets all the pain when she sees her son’s tiny face.

His eyes are just like his father’s.

Will starts sleeping through the night pretty early on. He’s a wonderful baby; chubby and alert, he’s already won over everyone at the bar- the owner’s wife, Nat, watches over him while working, but somehow her son ends up being the center of attention anyway.

When Will is six months old, he wakes up screaming.

Only after Jo holds her son in her arms does she notice the smell of smoke.

As they watch their apartment burn, Jo realizes that the Supernatural may not be done with them yet.

She’s only been gone for almost three years, but it feels like a lifetime. All the same, Ellen welcomes her home with a hug and understanding eyes.

They spend hours talking about everything under the sun, except for maybe that which is most important. Ellen doesn’t push, sensing that Jo will tell her in her own time.

Besides, anyone with eyes could tell who Will’s father was.

By the time Will turned two, Jo was covering cases on her own. She never ventured too far from home, and it hurt her greatly to leave him behind, even though she knew he’s safe at the roadhouse.

Ellen sent pictures by camera phone, and Jo said goodnight to Will every night. As soon as she figured out what kind of mess she’s gotten herself into the middle of, Jo vowed to quit the hunting life.

But first she’s got to find answers.

Will deserved nothing less.

A chance comes to get answers, but Jo walked away, and let herself fade into the crowd before Dean Winchester ever saw her face.

It’s been seven years, and Harvelle’s hasn’t changed at all.

Dean strode through the door, and he’s shocked to see Jo standing there, apron around her waist, hard at work.

“You’re back.”

Jo fought the urge to turn around and run into the back room. She’s silent for a moment, as her mind whizzes and she tries to figure out something to say. “Have been for a long while. You’d know that if you’d been around any.”

“It’s a great big world.” Dean sat down at a table. “You still have beer?”

“As if we’d get any hunters in here if we didn’t. Want one?”

“Yeah, whatever you got.” Dean grunted. His eyes followed her to the counter, where she bent over and grabbed to get a cold bottle. She no longer looked like a little girl, that was for sure.

“So what else can we do for you today?” She growled with a frown. Dean has to have some sort of ulterior motive. He wouldn’t show up here without one.

“I, I” Dean cleared his throat. “I guess I’m looking for…”

The front door was pushed open at that moment. “Mommy!” Will called, running towards Jo.

“Did you have a good day at school, honey?” Jo said, messing up her son’s blonde mop of hair.

“Yep! We studied Spiders!”

“How exciting!” Jo chirped.

“Who are you?” Will asked, noticing Dean for the first time.

“This is Mr. Winchester. A family friend, honey.” Jo turned to Dean. “And this is Will. My son.” She leans down and kisses Will on the forehead. “Why don’t you run along and see if Ash will let you play with his computer? Mommy needs to talk to Mr. Winchester.”

“Okay!” With that, Will was off.

“You’re a mommy.”

“Yeah, I am.”

“And he…he…”

Jo cleared her throat and sat down across from Dean. “He looks just like his Dad, doesn’t he? It blows me away every time I look at him.”

“But…”

“He was possessed. When I was pregnant, I was certain that I was living in some real world version some horror movie, but Dean, he’s the sweetest thing.” She laughed bitterly. “The demon might have been in control of Sam’s body that night, but there’s nothing demonic about my son.”
