Every summer, they rented a cottage on the Isle of Wight.

Time had changed them, transforming her golden hair to a hue of light gray, and adding flecks of salt and pepper to his dark hair; but in truth, they felt no older than they had when they first spent their holiday there years ago. They walked along the bay hand in hand, grateful for the companionship they had in one another.

Friends and neighbors considered them to be the perfect couple; colleagues at work were astounded by their efficiency and skill on the job. Their children looked to their long marriage for inspiration in their own lives; sure that their parent’s love story had been a lifelong affair.

There was more to them than one could see on the surface. More than most, they had secrets and stories to share. But they only shared their secrets with one another.

It felt safer that way.

Rose first met Sam Winchester when he joined Torchwood, a Yank who stood out agency like a sore thumb. He stumbled over the language, still accustomed to speaking American rather than proper English; and he was forever bemoaning the lack of ice in drinks or ketchup with chips. Yet for all his awkwardness, when it came to facing strange and supernatural events, Torchwood would be hard pressed to find someone who could top his acumen and skill.

They were assigned to work on several cases as partners. At first Rose didn’t know how to relate to the floppy haired American, or he to her. To their mutual surprise, they discovered that they worked together well as a team.

Soon, they became friends. She didn’t feel quite as lonely, didn’t miss the Doctor and the universe she knew quite as much, with Sam around. And when the day came that she shared that remarkable story with him, he didn’t laugh, but told her an incredible story of his own.

He had traveled the American continent, fighting demons and monsters; she had traveled through time and space, fighting aliens and monsters. They weren’t that different.

Rose initiated their first kiss, after Sam saved her life, having had a vision of an alien attacking her on her way home one evening. They took their relationship slow to begin with, but it wasn’t long until they were exchanging rings and walking down the aisle.

They’d both faced incredible and extraordinary events in their lives; each had their way of life ripped out from underneath them without warning or due cause. In each other they found a solid ground, a basis to rebuild a life that had been shattered.

Working and living aside Sam, Rose felt the most alive she’d ever felt in this universe. The most alive she’d felt without the Doctor.

Neither Sam or Rose ever quite forgot what had gone on before. But they learned how to cope, and time changed them, not only in body but in spirit. They never stopped fighting the good fight, not even now as they were facing retirement.

But they were happy.

Years in England had shaded Sam’s accent, except for the strange southern twang that was strangely strong on a few particular words. He spoke proper English now, but would still use Americanisms to drive Rose nuts from time to time.

Coming back to their rented cottage after their walk, they noticed that they were no longer alone. Rose slipped her hand free of her husband’s grasp.

“Dean! Jessica! Jack!” She cried, overjoyed to see her children at the cottage door.
