[Most of the morning, Ceodore's outside the house working on putting the finishing touches on a sizable pen. Who it's intended to contained is fairly obvious, if the disgruntled warking of a half-grown, black chocobo is any indication. The bird's been tethered to one of the posts so he can't get away and into trouble, while his owner slaves away on ( Read more... )

Absolutely! I was finishing up at the Welcome Center, anyway. Should we go to the barracks, then?

Yeah. I'll bring one of my spares.

[He's got a fair collection of armaments stashed in his room. Force of habit.]

[Ceodore's waiting out front with two bows and one quiver. The smaller of the two is more lightweight and easier to handle than the second.]

[She walks out the front door after a few minutes, now devoid of the journal or other items. Smiling, she walks over to take the smaller bow.]

I'm all set.

Good. We can use my quiver since you're learning. You'll want one your size if you ever need to use it in a fight.

[Rydia nods.]

I'll remember to look for one, soon. For now, let's go.

[Once they get to the barracks, Ceodore pulls out a practice target for use, but then makes no move to actually use the thing.]

First, you have to learn how to draw. You don't want to lift then pull. It should be one movement, drawing the string while lifting the bow.

[Which he demonstrates both approaches. First the lift and pull, then doing them at the same time. He pulls it off so swiftly that it looks easy.]

Use the movement to your advantage.

[Rydia watches and listens intently, then gives it a try. Her own effort isn't nearly so swift or graceful, and she smiles a bit sheepishly upon noting that.]

It's definitely tougher than it looks.

[New respect for Rosa now, since she must have considerable strength to draw her bow so well.]

It takes practice. Using a bow effectively is just as much about practice as it is skill. Probably more.

Try that a few more times then we'll work with an arrow.

[Rydia nods and diligently practices. She's still relatively unskilled though gets marginally better each time. And she won't stop until Ceodore's satisfied she's at least improved enough to move on.]

Okay, good. Now nock an arrow to the string, and try it again. Use your hand on the bow to stabilize the shaft of the arrow.

[A nod, and then Rydia moves to do just that. The arrow wobbled a bit but she managed to steady it after a moment.]

Like this?

Right. Keep practicing that.

It's tedious but necessary.

This must really firm up the muscles, huh?

[She winces, but that doesn't stop her from trying again.]

[She gets a nod at that.]

It will. If you get too sore, take a break.
