In Which There We Managed Something of Use!

Yeah, so memes don't happen on Fridays. In fact, not much of ANYTHING happens on Fridays. That's FRIDAYS for you.

Day 08 - A book everyone should read at least once.

I'm not terribly prone to saying that there's a book that EVERYONE should read. In fact, I'm downright ornery about saying there is. I believe that the books a person has to read in their life time is highly personal and also highly situational. A book that someone needs to read when they're a teenager is highly different than a different teen may need to read and will be far different from a book they need to read when they're hitting their thirties, for example.

Still, gotta do what the prompt says. So you know what? Let's go with Pierre by Maurice Sendak.

For one, this is a short book. I use the term book loosely as really it's a poem and it would take maybe twenty minutes tops to read through if you decided to pause and consider each page. My mother can recite the entire thing from memory in about ten minutes, including if she forgets the order of a verse.

My mother, by the way, is fantastic at reading this book. She has done so, in fact, so many times that she does not need the book in front of her to recite the entire poem. This may or may not have something to do with why I picked this particular book for this prompt.

The story is about a boy, Pierre, who doesn't care. About anything. So much so, in fact, that he gets eaten by a lion. The story has a happy ending for everyone, however, and the moral is simple.

Care.

And I think we could all do with more of that.

Day 09 - Best scene ever.

Rumo and His Miraculous Adventures by Walter Moers is a great book. I got this one on a whim because it looked suitably crack. Actually, Hollie got it for me as my St. Gordy's present... two years ago now? It's a great adventure story with engaging characters and a magnificent world. It does run a little long at times (see, brick) and occasionally the world building gets just gratuitous. But the book has this fine way of telling stories that you think are needless side things that then get woven back into the story at some pivotal plot point that I enjoyed as a writer.

Hollie read this book and didn't terribly like it. She didn't hate it, but she wasn't very fond of the style and tone on a whole and was fairly certain it lost something in translation that made her feel like she was missing out on a lot of key joke (the original is in German and I've only read a translation myself).

But when I told her what scene I wanted to use, she agreed with me that it is certainly a deserving scene for the title "Best Ever."

The scene?

Ushan DeLucca's finest hour.
