Fic: Intro to Spying and Matchmaking (1/1)

Author's note: Spoilers for 604, post-ep fic written for kiki's JA post-ep fic fest on Tumblr. From the same Ficcy Friday Wednesday prompt from Funkapus that loveobsessed999 also did, we both wrote our own interpretations of it. Hope you enjoy.

It’s a text from Abed that halts Britta’s conversation with Elroy.
You must come now and bring Elroy and Frankie. It’s finally happening!
Britta smirks to herself at the message.
“Hey, come on,” she calls to Elroy. “Where’s Frankie? Abed wants us to see something.”
….

“You want us to spy on Jeff and Annie as they go on a not-date?” Frankie exclaims. “I’m sorry, but that doesn’t seem ethical.”

They’re standing outside the fashionable bar Jeff has taken Annie to. The remaining group can see them inside, chatting away and seemingly not knowing another world existed outside of their own eyes.

“Also, I don’t understand why this is such a huge deal anyway,” Frankie continues. “In fact, those two look like they could create amazing results with each other. Why aren’t they together?”

“Because history,” Abed explains. “During our first year, Jeff wanted J/B to be a thing. That didn’t happen when I created a video starring Jeff and Annie. After that - or before, who knows - Jeff began falling for Annie. Then their Tranny Dance kiss happened and nothing was the same after that.”

“From what I’ve seen, he cares a lot for her,” Elroy notes, adjusting his glasses. “I still don’t get why you and Britta are so concerned about it.”

Britta shrugs.

“Jeff and I - and Annie - have a complicated history, but they’re good for each other. Last year, Jeff got engaged to me and it was the biggest mistake of our lives.”

“Also, last year, Jeff opened the door down in Borchert’s lab because of his love for Annie,” Abed goes on, waggling his eyebrows mischievously. “I know because I saw his face and who he was looking at when we turned. Annie possibly saw too, I think.”

Britta raises her eyebrows at this information.

“I never knew that!”

“You were the only one who didn’t see,” Abed explains to her. “But I did, and I’ve been paying close attention to Jeff ever since. He loves Annie, and he knows it.”

He glances inside at the not-couple talking to each other on their not-date before turning back to the group.

“And you know …  with me and Diane’s help, I think Jeff and Annie are going to be just fine - finally.”

“Abed, I didn’t tell you you could ask Diane for help on personal matters,” Frankie splutters.

Abed shakes his head and places his finger to his lips.

“Just watch.”

“Young man, you should know that attempting to match make always goes poorly,” Elroy scolds.

“Wait, who’s Diane?” Britta asks. “And why is she important? Why don’t you want me to help?

“I agree Abed, Britta might be useful in helping push Jeff more towards Annie,” Frankie agrees, placing her hands on Britta’s shoulders.

Abed frowns.

“Britta is too closely involved with Jeff and Annie to be great help,” he explains. “This is why Diane will be crucial for it.”

The four peer in at the bar again. Annie laughs at something Jeff is saying, as Elroy’s lips curve in a smile.

“Something needs to happen soon with those two,” he says. “Abed, have you seen Jeff’s body language at the table?”

“And how it’s always angled towards Annie’s chair?” Abed chimes in, full of excitement. “I’ve been tracking it over the years. He thinks we’re oblivious, but I’m not. And with Diane’s help, I’m gonna see them get together as a real couple.”
