so I was rewatching Repilot again and I paid better attention to Jeff's commercial and you can see the sea in the distance, so yeah, they didn't even try to film in Denver. SIGH.
I MUST SAY THEY DO A GOOD JOB FAKING THAT IT'S COLORADO THOUGH AND I AM VERY GOOD AT SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF SO I CAN FORGIVE THEM THESE LAZINESSES FILMING-WISE.
OR OF COURSE I CAN JUST IMAGINE THAT COMMUNITY! COLORADO IS AN ALTERNATE VERSION OF COLORADO THAT SOMEHOW HAS SOME FEATURES OF CALIFORNIA....
But I can forgive them this very easily because they do pay good attention to what makes Colorado, Colorado otherwise.
Off the top of my head: references to skiing and snowboarding, in S1 and S4, the nearest lake being two hours away (accurate), in Basic Sandwich, we see an Arapaho (the Native Americans specific to the Colorado region) chief at the end, mentions of Boulder in S1, the study group looks like they went camping in Rocky Mountain National Forest in the Paradigms clips, and the scenes with them in what looks like Mexico could concievably be Colorado as well since our landscape has mountains but is also very arid and yes we have ghost towns!
Annie recycling and getting cash in exchange in S2 is also specific to this state, and Annie's bad neighbourhood could very easily be within the city of Denver, with its slums and bad areas. There's also LeVar Burton mentioning in S5 that starting a sea voyage from "landlocked Colorado" is not exactly the best idea. :P
So well yes, they do as bad a job as Disney's Good Luck Charlie when it comes to a Colorado/Denver setting (both shows are filmed in CA) but in a way they get the knacks of my state much better than GLC (whose California-based writers once had Mr Duncan tell Gabe that the recycling aluminum cans for money isn't done here WHICH IS WRONG) and so I can forgive both shows for their foibles when the shots of the show (s) betray that neither are filmed here.
Community still earns more points than Good Luck Charlie though because despite not filming here, they get the spirit of Colorado and its people down pat and for that, well, let's just say that Community has won my heart more than GLC (though I do enjoy GLC, just not as much as Community) and so whilst it is a bit disappointing they don't at least try to nab pictures of Denver/Colorado in general for a "feel" of Colorado throughout the series, they succeed in other ways for helping you believe that it's Colorado since they at least do try, and when they really try, I can see how much attention they've paid to the quirks of my state. :)
community,
and when they try they make it count,
community meta,
oh well,
at least they do try,
thanks writers,
sigh,
colorado
