So, when rewatching S1, it's fairly obvious that Jeff is totally reliant on speeches and "using words to get things" to the point that he's characterised as eloquent, witty, and manipulative

Okay, so I'm gonna reply to some older comments you've left on my stuff and then finish replying to our other convos at your LJ!
[Ooh I like this post!! It reminds me of a fic I read-- I can't remember where-- where Jeff is talking about how he's good at speeches and the big gestures, which makes him good in a crisis but causes him to falter in day to day life-- and this post shows that he's moved on from that to someone who doesn't *need* speeches and whatnot, because he can handle day to day life without causing crisises, because he (and everyone else) cares.]
Wasn't that one by vainhopes? I think it was one by vainhopes, and it was set after the S4 finale....
[I don't think he deliberately fumbled his speech, but I think it was pretty obvious that Annie *did* need the hug more than the speech. And Jeff needed it too :).]
I just rewatched it last night and he seems really at a loss for words. You are right that he doesn't seem to be deliberately fumbling it, per se, but he's obviously trying to say something that will make sense for this new, heartbreaking development, but the words just don't come.
And it is pretty obvious that they both needed the hug more than words, poor bbies. At least they had each other though.
[I like this interpretation :).
Finally, this whole thing harks back to what Jeff said in the S4 finale about "What do you say when you don't want a way out?"]
I like it too. It makes sense though - Annie has so impacted Jeff's life, even apart from her like when everyone lost touch between S4-S5, I can see him still writing in the diary she encouraged him to write in and striving to make his words truly mean something and be meaningful , and in a way it culminates with the two carefully chosen words he remembers when his "burst of human passion" for Annie opens the door in Basic Sandwich. (I watched it again last night and cried.)
And ooh, I didn't even notice how it harks back to the S4 finale and Jeff's statement there! How serendipitious!
Same here!! Although I think this might be the last one besides messages. Is that right?

Um, I think it was :)! I love his fics.

Yes, because they both needed the comfort of someone who they cared for, and who cared for them, without any ulterior motives. And Jeff didn't have the words, but in the end he didn't need them (which reccurs a lot in this relationship).

That speech is one of, if not my, favorite Winger speeches, and it saddens me that the hope therein was completely destroyed by Harmon. (Seriously though, Jeff's eventual speech to Annie better top it!!) And yes, I can see him writing in the diary too (and I can see her drinking scotch and remembering that she is strong, because I think that's what Jeff taught Annie).
