~Royal Moon~
*Chapter #2*
“Look out!”
The girl ducked as the monster jumped over her. Spinning around she raised her hand toward it started whispering something with her eyes closed.
The monster stopped and turned back toward her and leapt again. But the girl had already finished her spell and shouted ‘Freeze!’ The stone around her neck started to glow a brilliant blue.
Ice rose from the ground and engulfed the creature in ice. Then a shadow appeared from above as a young man came crashing down shouting “Here it comes!” His great sword came down hard and sliced the ice in half.
The ice shattered and the monster with it. Nothing was left except a tiny shining shade of some sort of crystal.
“Great job” the girl jumped up and down. Her long brown hair flowed in the wind. She was about 18 and still full of energy. She picked up the shard. A cat pure black except it’s white paws, chest and tip of the tail, crept out of it’s hiding spot a few meters away and ran to it’s master. “Let’s go back!” she winked as she picked up that cat and placed it on her shoulder then skipped past her partner.
“You still keep amazing me with your spells” said the young man. He was strongly built form years of training and his hair was short and recently cut. He was 20 years old but still acted like a boy the age of 18. “Wait up Luna” he called turning to follow the girl who was already many paces away.
“Come on! You’re such a slow poke!” She called and he started running toward her, “I guess your name suits you ZERO!” she turning and starting to run herself “Last one back is a rotten egg.”
“If Knightstorm was here I could beat you in a flash” Zero called after her.
We’ve gone through a lot since our village was destroyed, but we made it through. Luna and I found our way to the great Star City, the capital of the Emerald Planet, where we were taken in by an old couple. They had heard what had happened and were willing to take care of us. They taught is a lot about life and the old women even knew some magic and helped explain that Luna herself had some of her own. She taught Luna how to use basic magic and later on Luna took lessons with a greater magic user. While I trained with my sword, she learned magic. It was only a year ago that we started off on our own just wondering and fighting monsters around the city, collecting the shards they left behind. We go back to town from time to time to restock on goods. The crystal shards can be exchanged for money at the Hunter Station. The bigger they are the more they are worth. We never stay long though. We always leave after a couple of days. I left Knightstorm with gram and gramps till we decide to leave the planet for good, but Yuna stays with Luna at all times.
“Can’t we try and go further this time? Maybe we could make our way to Lily Town?” Luna said while looking at the big map of our small planet. Yuna drank from a saucer of milk next to her owner.
“I guess we could” Zero said sipping his drink at the other side of the table. “But that mean we have to stock up on materials. And I don’t think we have enough money yet.”
“Then let’s go back and fight more monsters! There are plenty monsters up on the hunters board for money?” Luna said hopefully taking up her drink and looked around at the all the people walking down the street. “No matter how much I try I always feel so uneasy around so many people.” she sighed and Yuna rubbed against her arm.
“You’re right. It’s been almost 5 years and we still prefer to stay outside the city.” He took another sip of his drink. “Okay then,” he put down his drink “Lets go to the Hunters Station and pick us some monsters to go fight.”
“Alright!” Luna exclaimed jumping up and putting the map away. “Here we go again!” Yuna purred as her master jumped for joy.
Luna always loves a challenge and always makes things fun, even when they weren’t. Every now and then she would come up with some new spell to use in battle. I never know when she practices them but it always seemed to be perfect the first time I see it in battle.
They made their way to the Hunters Station, a few blocks down the busy streets of Star City.
Hunter Stations were pub/stores which slayers and hunters went to collect jobs and information on monsters. It like a job that licenses slayers and hunters could get paid for. There was supposed to be one in each big town all over the universe. Each monster out in the world all have significant classes and symbols that are engraved into their skin by their neck or on their forehead. The higher the number shown by a marking, the higher it’s level. When a monster is defeated they leave behind a crystal shard that is engraved with the same symbol and number as the monster had. Once a slayer brings the shard to the Hunter Station they are rewarded with money corresponding to the level of the monster. Although Luna and Zero only recently joined that hunter’s organization they were already one of the best teams in Star City.
“Fred! What’s new” Luna called to the manager as they walked in to the pub like store followed by her small companion and her partner.
“Nothing, little lady. Looking for more work I see?” he said as Luna walked up to the giant board in the back of the room.
“Yes yes! Zero and I want to get enough money so we can travel around the Emerald Planet” She smiled at the manager and then went back to looking at the board.
“I thought your goal was to get enough money to leave this Green Planet?” the manager laughed, then turned to Zero and whispered “She’s growing up really fine that one. I wonder what she will look like all grown up”
“Hey!” Zero groaned “that’s my little sister your talking about!” the he giggled “but your right.”
“ZERO!” Luna rushed over and started jumping up in front oh him, cat on shoulder bobbing up and down. Zero jumped back in surprise.
“What!” Zero tried to grab the pieces of paper she was waving around but he couldn’t quite get it because she was jumping around to fast!
“Here here! Let’s go here!” she finally stopped jumping and handed Zero the papers.
“I think you need to start acting your age rather then a 2 year old” Zero commented as he took the papers from her hand. It was a flier that advertised that someone was looking for a team to get rid of a giant monster in the east part of the city. The reward was 20,000floaras. “Wow”
“Yes wow! That would be enough right! And all we need to do is go after that one monster!” Luna said with a smile
“But for that much money it must mean that that monster is really dangerous and strong.” Zero said to Luna then turned to the Manager “Do you have any information on this?”
“I do” said Fred “The man came in himself and explained the situation to me. He said that it is a giant plant monster, classified VIII class, that lures people in the woods with beautiful mysterious scents and then never return. I know of only one other monster like it that was seen around these parts. Only the Cross Team was able to defeat it. But since then they have left theses parts in search of bigger adventures. I don’t know if you guys have enough experience to take down a monster at VIII class.”
“Can’t we try?” asked Luna “if things look too hard we can retreat?”
“I guess we’ll take it” said Zero “I mean maybe there will be people already there that are after the monster and we can help each other, if needed?”
“Well if you say so. I trust you, Zero, to know your own strength. Take care you two and come back safely” the manager said as he watched them go, Luna waving goodbye.
Walking through the city was always confusing for Luna and Zero. It had always been like that. There were so many people walking and so many different directions to go. It took Luna and Zero about 2 hours to find their way across the huge city to the east side and then find the address written on the flyer. They were surprised to find themselves in front of a giant mansion of a house. When they reached the front door they were greeted by a mid-aged man.
“Thank you for coming.” the man said looking at the flyer in Zero’s hand “the Master will appreciate your help, please come in” he step to the side and ushered the team in.
Luna and Zero both exchanged glances as they were brought to a gorgeous rich colored room. Yuna immediately jumped off Luna’s shoulder and started to wonder around.
“I presume you’re the recruits that have come to get rid of our monster problem” a younger man was sitting on one of the great comfy looking couches sipping some tea. He was wearing really fancy clothes probably made of the finest materials. The man put down his tea cup on a try that sat on the little table in front of him and got up to great his guests.
“Yes we are slayers, Team Believer” Zero said stepping forward to confront the man “My name is Zero and…”
The man completely ignored him and walked right past him. Zero turned to see where the man was going and saw he was heading straight toward Luna, who was looking straight at him a little confused.
“And who might you be young lady” the man said passionately taking her hand and kissing it gently.
Luna froze and was unable to speak as she stared at her hand for a few moments “This is my sister, Luna, she specializes in magic” Zero answered for her.
“I can’t let such a beautiful lady risk her life to fight such a horrible monster!” the man said looking back at Zero “your own sister you would put at risk”
“He’s not really my brother,” Luna said “but we call each other family because we are all that is left of our home town” Luna looked at her feet “But! We did come to fight that monster and it was I who wanted to fight” Luna looked up sharply defending Zero. Yuna returned and sat at her master’s feet.
“I see, well if you manage to defeat that monster I will pay you double!” the young man said with a wink.
“Really!” Luna’s eyes glowed with anticipation.
“Well of course” the man said “by the way my name is Eric, I am the only child of the Vivricks, pleased to meet you.” He bowed to Luna.
Luna ignored him though and turned to Zero “What are we waiting for! Let’s go!” she turned and ran towards the door, Yuna at her heels.
Zero signed and started to follow but then turned back to look that Eric who was staring speechless after Luna, “You got her all worked up you know. She loves to make a difference. And now I think she will fight till she is exhausted.” He turned back toward the door and left.
Outside Zero followed Luna toward the forest at the edge of the city. The trees were huge and tall, it would be easy to get lost since the forest was so dense. “We have to stay together” Zero commented as they started off.
“Okay” Luna replied and she stayed by his side as they walked farther into the forest.
At first everything was normal, the sounds of birds and animals in the distant. It was like that for about an hour before Luna commented that the birds had stopped. Zero took his sword out of its case, and held it as they went on. For a while there was no sound what so ever. Luna started to become uneasy, since she stayed really close to Zero’s side. But then a beautiful scent came on the breeze.
“It’s so beautiful” Luna said as she closed her eyes and took a deep breathe inhaling the mysterious sent.
“Be careful! Don’t let your guard down” Zero said sharply and Luna opened her eyes and smile apologetically.
It wasn’t long before they heard a scream coming from up ahead.
“There is someone out there!” Luna said and was about to run ahead when Zero grabbed her arm. “What! Someone is in trouble! We have to help!”
“I know I know, but we can’t just run in with out a plan.”
“You’re right. But what are we going to do?” Luna asked looking into the distance.
“I think plan 3 with work” Zero said and when Luna nodded her acknowledgement they both took off one to the right one to the left, leaving Yuna sitting in the little clearing surrounded by hundreds of trees… ‘meow’…
Luna went off to the left and ran through the bushes and around the trees. Plan 3 was where both members of the team split up and surprised the enemy from two different directions. Luna’s job was to cast enfeebling magic on it so it was more vulnerable to Zero’s attacks, but also to cast enhancing magic to make Zero’s attacks more powerful. Luna brought her hand together at her chest and started chanting some spells so they would be ready to fire at the monster when it came into site.
She charged into a clearing and came face to face with a bunch of small III class plant monsters. The bigger VIII monster seemed to be guarded by the smaller weaker monsters, but there were about 20 of them. Jumping backward Luna avoided an attack from one of them and then fired her spells at the weaker monsters. ‘Oh no! I forgot to check the clearing!’ she said frantically gathering herself together.
Zero viewed the clearing from his side and say Luna fight the other monsters. ‘She forgot to check the clearing before she changed in again’ Zero sighed and then charged toward the bigger monster knowing that Luna could take care of the weaker monsters by herself.
The VIII class monster was huge, towering about 20feet tall and was shaped like a giant venus fly trap but had big lushish leaves and buds on its steam. It had long roots that it walked on above the ground and those also were about 5feet thick.
Zero sped toward the young girl and managed to block one of the big monsters attacks just as it was about to hit the girl. Holding his sword in the blocking position he started talking to the girl “Are you okay?!”
“y-…yes” the girl said, and Zero could hear the fear in her voice
“Can you move?”
“I-… I think so”
“Good! I need you to get out of here. My partner and I with take care of the monster. Can you make it back out of the forest from here?”
“y-…yes”
“Okay! ...GO!” as Zero shouted he turned his sword into an attack position and charged at his foe.
Luna, on the other side of the clearing, was just about finished with her pest problem, when she saw the little girl running off in the direction of the city. ‘Good she’s safe.’ Luna sighed with relief.
Turning back to small fry opponents, Luna closed her eyes “time to shine” she whispered. Bring her hands together again she started chanting an almost songlike spell. “~raining fire, descend from heaven, smash my foe, and protect those I care for~” her pendant shone bright again allowing her to release her magic to its full potential.
The dark clouds that were covering the sky suddenly parted and through the gap, soaring straight down towards the clearing, fell chunks of burning meteors. They rained down on the clearing wiping out all the small monsters and causing damage to some of the big monsters roots.
Zero who had been fighting his way through the many roots to the main body halted when he saw the raining meteors. He saw some heading toward himself and that’s when he felt a great barrier form around him. As the meteors crashed down on the barrier they were immediately destroyed. ‘Luna’s magic has gotten really strong. She can caste two spells at once now.’ He turned in her direction in time to see the last of the small monster evaporate into nothingness leaving behind their small crystal.
Luna opened her eyes and stared up at her main enemy. ‘I hope we can do this’ she whispered to herself ‘I know we can do this!’
“~Fields of HOPE~” Luna shouted raising one hand toward the sky while the other clenched around the necklace around her neck. “~Dancing fire of burning flame, char away those to blame, scorch high to the heavens above, assist those I love!~”
Zero felt his sword swell with power and magic flames started to dance on his blade. “Alright Here We Go!” he raised his blade over his head and built up the little magic he had down under his feet. “Up and Away!” releasing the magic built up under him and he was shot up into the sky right above his enemy.
“~Swift blade of flaming life, show your true power, shine with all your might~” Luna chanted on as she watched Zero soar high ‘here comes his greatest attack.’ She turned her attention back to the flames scorching the ground around the monster; they were slowing burning away at its powerful roots. “It’s the end for you!”
Words came to his mouth as Zero reached the climax of his jump. “Burning BLADE!” he shouted and down he went like a bolt of lightning. Ignited in flames of his blade he crashed down on the monster cutting it right in two.
Luna braced herself for the impact as Zero descended. When he hit the ground a great wave of power blow in all directions and Luna was almost knocked down by the power. ‘Wow that was way more powerful then I though’
The smoke cleared and left Zero standing in a cleared clearing his blade leaning on his shoulder and a smile in his face. He held up a pretty large chunk of crystal that was engraved with a flower the number VIII. “We did it!” he said smiling warmly at his little sister.
