~Royal Moon~
*Chapter #1*

There were always the stories which Zero’s dad, James, used to tell us. About how he traveled the galaxy as a hero in search of those that needed saving. He talked about how many, from where he came from, at a certain age, left their towns in search of adventure. We always loved those stories, Zero and I.

* * * * *

“Zero, when we leave in search of our adventure, where do you suppose we should go first” Luna asked curiously.

“I am not to sure. But before we leave I think you should train with a sword to” Zero suggested as he practiced with his wooden sword.

“I know I know” she said adding to herself ‘but I am helpless with a sword’. “What types of jobs are their out there?”

“Not to sure” Zero replied as he swung the wooden sword with ease, practicing what his father had shown him.

“Can I go ask him while you are practicing?” Luna asked looking in the direction the village was.

They were currently in the meadow on the other side of the hill with which overlooked the village.

Stopping in mid swing Zero looked up “I’ll come with you. I think I am pretty much done for today” He smiled warmly.

Walking back from the meadow they climbed the hill and stopped when the reached the top looking down on the village in the Sky Valley.

Looking down you could see everything in the Sky Valley. People walked along the dirt streets where villages were selling some of their crops for profit to travelers and other villages. There were rarely many travelers and quests of the village, maybe about 5 per day. They mainly were all headed for the larger city to the north called Star City.

Walked toward Zero’s house, Luna noticed that their neighbors were building a little hut for firework to the side of the house. Mostly all the houses and residents were hand made by the village men. Sometimes when new people settled in the village all the village men would get together and hull huge logs, from trees they cut near by, to the new site of the house. It took them months to build one but it brought them all together, everyone was friends everyone else.

“I’m home” Zero called as he opened the wooden down to his house looking around for his parents “Dad you home?”

“Zero, my boy!” James said coming striding out of the living room. “Did you take care of all the horses?”

“Yes we did Father” he said with a smile, looking over a Luna he added “and I also did an hour of practice with my wooden sword”

“He is getting really good at wielding it” Luna said with a warm shine in her blue eyes.

“Luna, I am glad for all your help. Oh and I almost forgot! I have something really special for you.” He opened on the wooden cabinets and took out a little box. “Your father and I made it ourselves,” stopping before adding, “With the help of the blacksmith as well of course.”

He handed the little box over. And Luna opened it up to reveal a beautiful necklace. It had a tiny blue stone in the center of a silver circle. The strap was made of leather.

“It’s beautiful” she picked it up holding it in front of her watching it spin round and round on the strap. “Thank you so much,” little tears starting forming in the corner of her eyes.

“Happy Birthday Luna” said James in a soft voice looking proudly at the young girl who he had got to know over the past 8 years.

Zero, who had disappeared for a bit, reappeared next to her, holding something in his hand. “This is my present for you. It was hard keeping it a surprise along with the others” he said holding a little kitten in his hands. “Liz had kittens a few weeks ago, and I did my best to keep it a secret until I could give you one”

“Oh My Gosh! It’s so cute” the kitten was still very small and fragile. But its fur was soft and beautiful. It was pure back except for white paws, chest and the very tip of its tail. But then another white spot caught her eye. On its forehead was a little patch of white fur that was shaped as a diamond. “I’ll call her Yuna.” Luna said proudly.

* * * * *

There was lots of partying for the rest of the day. Zero never got the chance to talk to his father about what jobs were out their in the world for travelers and hero’s.

Once all the stars were out and the whole town was asleep, Zero woke up. It had been a little tradition of Zero’s and Luna’s to get up after the village was a sleep to go up to the meadow and watch the stars. So as Zero snuck out into the night he looked up and saw that all the stars were out and no clouds in the sky.

Walking up the path to the top of the hill that over looked the Sky Valley, Zero met up with Luna. She was carrying her little kitten in her arms and it slept soundly. Luna smiled as she looked down on it and they walked on down to the meadow. Eventually lying down on the grass and looking up at the stars that hovered over. The two pointed out different constellations such as the Giant Lion and the Roaring Tiger. Occasionally they made up their own new constellations.

As they lay their in the grass Zero noticed something strange. There was some sort of glow that caught his eye and he sat bolt up right and staring into the darkness. Luna sat up slowly watching Zero with curiosity.

“What’s wrong?” she asked.

“I thought I saw something” he never took his eyes of the surrounding meadow. Scanning, searching for whatever he had seen.

Just then Yuna, Luna’s kitten woke up with a start, and peered off into the distance. Luna followed her gaze but could not see a thing, then turned to Zero. “Zero, something’s wrong here isn’t it? I feel scared.”

Zero scanned the meadow and saw that Luna was doing the exact same thing. Yuna, was quite and still in her owners arms watching and waiting. It wasn’t till a bang came and they all jumped and turned.

“The Village! It came from the village!” Zero shouted out jumping to his feet and grabbed Luna’s hand pulling her up too.

They all took off running as fast as they could. Up the hill that over looked the valley below. They stopped in horror as they looked down. Many of the village houses were on fire and then sudden sounds of guns went off and shouting reached their ears. Zero quickly turned toward Luna and say that her eyes were wide with fear and that tears were forming in her eyes.

“Stay here!” he shouted over the horrid sounds that were lingering in the still air.

Running down the hill and into the town, he ran, straight toward his house. He found his mother and Luna’s mother hiding as he came in.

“Mother! What’s going on!?”

“Zero! I am so glad you’re safe!” His mother cried rushing toward him and embracing him in a big hug.

“Have you seen Luna?!” Luna’s mother said coming out of her hiding place. “I can’t find Luna”

“It’s okay, I left her up in the meadow. We were watching the stars like we normally do when we felt something was wrong. She is safe I promise” then turning to his mother he added “Where is father!”

“Out there somewhere. He is fighting the raiders who attacked without warning.”

“I have to find him!” Zero turning and ran toward the door. But his mother reached out and grabbed his arm.

“Promise me your will be careful!” she cried, tears streaming down her face.

“I Promise! I will protect this village along with everyone in it!” He took off running, making sure to keep hidden from any raiders that wondered by. Most of the action was coming from the center of the village where the huge barn was.

‘Are the raiders after our horses?’ Zero asked himself as he sneaked past a couple of Raiders.

He found his father. James was fighting with his sword with a couple of Raiders with many village men beside him. He waited till his dad had fought them off before running toward him yelling “Father”

“Zero! Get out of here! This is no place for a child”

“I am not a child and I am ready to fight!” Zero picked up a pole arm which one of the other villagers had dropped while fighting. He swung it at some on coming Raiders, knocking them off their feet.

“That is no weapon for you to use” James quickly handed Zero one of his swords that was hanging on his belt. “This is a Sword for a true warrior! Let’s defend this village together! Charge!” He yelled and the villagers all charged forward toward the invaders.

* * * * *

Luna watched down in horror as she saw villages fighting with the invaders around the barn. Tears were pouring from her eyes. Yuna, her kitten, was rubbing against her trying to comfort her.

“Luna!”

Luna turned to see her mother and Zero’s mother coming up the hill from the village toward her.

“Mother!” she sprung up and ran into a warm embrace. “I am scared! Where is Zero?! Where is Father?!” tears kept pouring from her eyes

“They have gone to fight.” Luna’s mother said “Everything will be all right” she half said to reassure herself.

They sat in silence for a while as Zero’s mother watched the village below. Yuna was curled up watching beside her.

Suddenly she cried out “Some of them are coming this way!”

“What?!” shouted Luna’s mother. Then she quickly turned to Luna “Luna, do you remember that place where James took you and Zero one summer. Please go there and hide. If anyone comes make sure you see and know who you are before you show yourself! Now GO!”

Luna stared at her mother for a sec and when with a little push from her mom she took off at a run toward the forested area beyond the meadow, with Yuna at her heels.

There came the sound of gun shouts but no screams. She dare not look back she just kept running and running. Not till she was in the trees and hiding did she find that she stopped. She didn’t want to go on, so she hid and looked back over the meadow. To her horror she saw two men coming her way. Yuna was rubbing her feet telling her to keep running. But Luna was too scared to move, even when a light went over her face and one of the raiders shouted out to the others.

Luna turned and ran, ran like she had never run before. But she could hear the sound of the raiders gaining on her. When she felt them right behind her she suddenly screamed out. It was like no cry she had ever made before and suddenly a giant form appeared in front of her, a jaguar cat. She froze staring straight at it in shock.

It leapt over her and straight at the raiders roaring its deep growling cry. Luna didn’t look back, she ducked down behind a tree and panted deeply, Yuna at her feet. Gun shoots rang out followed by a man’s dying cry. Tears fell from Luna’s eyes once more. She was going to die she could feel it. But nothing happened, suddenly all was dead quite.

* * * * *

Guns fired, women and children screamed running toward the forest only to be cornered off by the raiders. Zero saw people of his village being killed before his very eyes, but he was powerless to stop it. This battle was being lost, but I knew he needed to keep fighting for those that were still alive. He hoped Luna and her mother along with his own mother were safe away by now. Would he ever see them again?

A raider was clashing swords with his father a few paces away and Zero charged stabbing the invader through the heart as his father went on toward a couple of other raiders. Suddenly he noticed out of the corner of his eye movement on the hill that led up toward the meadow.

“Oh no” he quickly turned and ran toward the trail, just briefly catching his father’s eye. James gave him a nod and Zero took off.

With a new furry rushing through him he ran like he had never before. Cutting at raiders as he rushed past them, slashing them when they were blocking his way but nothing stopped him. Toward the meadow he kept running never straying from his path. Faster faster, he needed to protect Luna and the others. They needed him, they needed his protection.

Bang Bang. Came two gun shots from above and with more anger building up within him he exploded up the hill in time to see two raiders standing over two bodies. His mother…Luna’s mother. He lost control, flying at his enemies like a bolt of lightning. He blanked out and when he came to he found himself standing over his mother. There was blood covering his blade and he saw that the raiders were dead a few meters away.

Bending down over his mother he saw that she was still breathing and as she choking out word he could hardly hear. He bend down close to her listened hard trying to hear her words

“Luna” she said in a raspy voice “stone”

That’s all that Zero got. Tears streamed down hard from his eyes as he turned away and cried. But then Luna came to his mind.

‘Stone’ was what his mother had said. Did she mean the glowing stone in the center of the forest? He had to find Luna and fast.

* * * * *

Luna crept out of her hiding spot and looked around. The quietness was terrible and as she wondered back the way she had come she came upon a gruesome site. Lying down on the ground lay two raiders, torn from giant claws, blood on the ground around them.

A few feet away lay the giant jaguar lying on its side. Luna could see it was hurt badly, the gun shots must have got it.

Walking toward it slowing she whispered “You save us?”

Walking closer and closer and soon lay down beside it and reached out to touch it stopping for a second before he hand touched its fur.

“I want to help you” she whispered again as she placed her hand on its side.

Yuna came up beside it and let out a small meow. Luna closed her eyes tight and wished as hard as she can “I really am hopeless” she cried “I can’t help fight or save anyone who is dying or hurting” tears started to flow down her cheeks

A soft blue light shone bright and she quickly opened her eyes. Looking down around her neck she saw that it was her necklace that was glowing warm and soft. Wiping away her tears she took the necklace in hand.

“I will be your guardian,” came a soft voice that made Luna jump in surprise. “I will always be close and always be there when needed. Just call my name, Yunara.”

The voice faded off and when Luna turned toward the jaguar she saw it was gone. Yuna, her kitten meowed softly, “I will always be with you.”

Luna stared at it but didn’t have time to think when she heard someone coming through the bush. Holding her breath she felt who ever it was coming straight toward her.

As it came through the bush she raised her hand and shouted “Stay away!” A blue beam of light suddenly lit up the whole area revealing trees all around for 5 meters. Out of the trees came a boy of 17 years old, holding a blood stained blade in his hands.

“Zero!” Luna yelled running as fast as her scared legs would carry her.

“I am glad you are safe. How did you do that!” he commented on the bright light and then embracing her with one hand.

But before she could answer the ground rumbled hard and was followed by a great bang! After things stopped shaking, Luna and Zero, followed closely by Yuna, made their way back out of the forest and toward the village and the dreadful bang.

On the hill over looking their village smoke and flames soared high. The whole village was in flames, black smoke rising high into the sky. Everything was destroyed, and Zero remembered something his father had once told him.

“I remember one time when I was traveling I saw a great battle where men used this big black circular balls and rolled them toward their enemies. The small balls exploded and caused great explosions that would shake even the earth. They were called…”

“Bombs…” Zero echoed the word his father had said “But why us? Why our village? What did they want!?”

Knightstorm suddenly appeared out of nowhere all saddled and ready for a ride. Zero saw a note hanging from the saddle and took it and read it while Luna, who had taken fold of Knightstorms reins, looked from the side.

Dear Zero

I saw you leave and I was glad. I didn’t want you caught up in what is to happen. The Raiders were after the stone I gave Luna. It was something I found while traveling and I thought they had forgotten all about it. I guess I was wrong. But to get rid of them the rest of us have decided it was better to end it all in one blow. We are going to set free bombs in our own village. I don’t know where you are so I have sent Knightstorm to find you. He is now yours. Please take care of Luna and any others that have survived. I am really sorry my son. Carry on as a hero and a fighter for both you and I. I am sure you will turn into a great Warrior someday. And Luna, the magic of that stone will always protect you. For it belongs to you.

Love from James,
Warrior of Riverside
