Ganked from
thunderemerald. Book meme! I'm going to not name manga for them, despite the fact that I have plenty of relevant titles. ^_^
1. One book that changed your life:
Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton. It was the first adult book I ever read(fourth grade, I believe.).
2. One book that you've read more than once:
Maps in a Mirror by Orson Scott Card. Amazing collection of short stories; I used to check out the Exeter library's copy of it ALL THE TIME. (It was out of print at the time, so their hardcover was my only access to it.) It was amusing to see the dates stamped in the checkout sheet --they were all mine, except for 1986 on back.
3. One book you'd want on a desert island:
A sketchbook A complete collection of Rumi's poetry. I figure without food or water supplies, the poems will make plenty of sense, or at least amuse me.
4. One book that made you laugh:
Undead and Unwed by MaryJanice Davidson. Vampire crack chicklit. Seriously. (And yes, I recommend/praise/mention it left and right. So?)
5. One book that made you cry:
A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks. Oh, shush --the movie came out and my friends all said the book was better. I read the book and didn't bother with the movie.
6. One book that you wish had been written:
Alice in Peril by Lewis Carroll, an intelligent and snarky examination of growing up into the dismal adult world. Preferably an annotated edition so I can actually understand all Carroll's references.
7. One book that you wish had never been written:
dangerous angels by Francesca Lia Block. I will never understand the appeal of this pseudo-artsy farce of young adult literature. Wasted my money, and there wasn't even any amusement factor. It wasn't bad writing, it was blah writing.
8. One book you're currently reading:
CultureShock! Japan, in preparation for my eventual relocation there. Hopefully.
9. One book you've been meaning to read:
Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation by Lynne Truss. Sadly, this is in the boxes of stuff shipped from my dorm. They've arrived, but there's nowhere to unpack them to.

I've watched a few episodes of the xxxHolic anime, and I am incredibly disappointed. The voices, the adaptation of the art, the smoothness of animation, the easily discernible contrasts between all the black solid shapes, the OP and ED....suck. Just...suckage. I don't understand how they managed to screw up such a lovely manga, I really don't. It's all so....cheap. That's it: nothing in the anime is top-notch or even middle-tier. The storyline is several times more interesting than Tsubasa, yet Tsubasa lands the shiny smooth animation, awesome OST, amazing OP and ED...and xxxHolic gets...late nineties-quality animation, awkward adaptations of the characters' already elongated limbs, mediocre music, unheard of (and for good reason) artists for the OP and ED...
To reiterate: I'm incredibly disappointed. I really am. It had such potential to rival Vampire Princess Miyu in eerieness and Ranma 1/2 in cracky character interactions and Loveless in pretty, flowy scenes. And I have to squint at the screen because I can't tell visually where one character ends and another begins, and it's NOT an intended artsy effect, it's lousy lineart. *pissed off*
And now...a question: Does anyone recall if Roy Mustang learned about the Gate over the course of the anime? Working on an FMA plotbunny (I know, I know, I should be working on my OT3, bah), and I need to know. Help, please? *puppy eyes*
Yes, I'm still up. I plan to stay up until the sun begins to rise. Yes, I'm afraid of ghosts right now. Shut up.
