(no subject)

I love the Japanese programs we get on Taiwanese cable. My favorite is TV Champion, which is a competition between various 'experts' on a given subject, done in rounds. Last week the theme was cardboard creations, and this one competitor made an amazing cardboard gorilla, self-powered Rolls Royce-esque pushcart, and a playhouse for a pair of pet foxes (this one woman who got beyond round one made this ugly-ass hippo and lame flower-cart). I also saw an episode this week with these pastry artists with the theme being 'fruits.' There was one with teams making crazy Rube Goldberg contraptions, with each round requiring a specific task be done at some point and/or certain materials used --by far the coolest episode ever. There was one ages ago where the contestants had to be walking omnipedias of all things anime-ish --including the name of every monster ever fought by Ultraman.

So, you know, crazy stuff. Some episodes are more interesting than others, clearly. Some of the pastry ones are dreadfully boring.

Today's episode is a competition between hair styling teams. In round one's sudden death between the bottom two teams, the models were dowdy girls from Akihabara, on a college age anime fan (they showed a picture of her cosplaying Riza Hawkeye) and a 27 year old OL who plays video games obsessively in her dark little apartment. The FMA fan when asked by her stylist team what she wanted to look like said that she wanted to look like Riza Hawkeye. And the commentators and host and general audience all drew a complete blank. Now, the DVDs were pictured in the Akihabara store where they went model-hunting, so FMA had been out for a while when this episode filmed.

I'm a bigger geek than the Japanese themselves.

Anyway, the FMA girl's style won, because it totally transformed her face. Créateur Uchino was her stylist team, and if I'm ever in Japan and have time and money to burn, I totally want to go to their salon --they did the hair and makeup for this McDonald's commercial that was hot. I want to be hot too.

I think I should aim for Japan as a place to live for the next few years. Unfortunately, I don't know as what. The JET program is interesting, but pay is low and the commitment is for three years. Mew...
