I've had a rather good week or so. The Festival last weekend was great, though muddy and rainy for much of it. Still, it did not dampen our spirits (ok so at first we were a little grumpy about the total lack of summer). There was an eclectic mix of bands and artists and much dancing in wellies. As a festival should be - not too big, commercial and family-orientated with great organic food/ale.The final night was crisp and clear, the stars visible over the Devonshire countryside. I've since had dreams about that area - the West Country certainly seems a magical place, and the festival was another example of the warmth and friendliness that I have encountered in that part of the country. I will definitely go again, and take as many of my friends as I can persuade...
Anyways...a few discovered bands/act (Myspace links):
3 Daft Monkeys - A gypsy/folk/world music/roots inspired 3 piece from Cornwall.
Afro Celt Soundsystem - Possibly my favourite act of the whole weekend, with so many influences merging together from East & West. Some great live drumming - a full live band of various world instruments. Much wellie dancing was done by all!
Willy Mason - A rock/blues/country singer from America, the first artist we saw on arrival in the Big Top. Beautiful song writing.
Dreadzone - a fun festival band, I'm pretty new to dub/live electronica but they provided a great summer atmosphere despite the rain!
Gogol Bordello - Rather entertaining gypsy/folk/rock act, discovered some months ago.
Great Big Sea - folk/acoustic act from Newfoundland (and very proud of the fact, bless 'em!)
And the hosts of the festival -
Levellers Otherwise, we've enjoyed some much belated sunshine the apst few days. After spending a lovely evening with
liz666 I went and sat in the park yesterday evening, enjoying the rarity of natural sunlight with a book. Today however we went on an 8 mile hike and I over did my sun intake. I am now somewhat red and painful, foolishly forgot suncream...I blame the chaotic mostly cold british weather for surprising me! Still, it was a beautiful hike and rather tiring as we've done so little decent walking this summer. There will be photos later...
