Carrier

Has anyone been watching the show Carrier on PBS. It's awesome to say the least. It almost makes me want to join the Navy. Both my parents had careers in the Navy; my mom as a nurse and my dad as the Chief Engineer on a couple of different destroyer class ships. She worked at the Naval hospitals in the US while he did 6 month deployments at sea. I ( Read more... )

(can you even be one, or is that restricted to Army kids)

Yes, you can be a Navy brat. Or your could be an Air Force brat, like me. I did not get to be born on another continent, but I did get to travel a lot...*g*

And being on the flight deck of a aircraft carrier? *shudder* Probably the most dirty, dangerous job out there. Uh, I'll stick to my accounting and forklift driving, thanks.

And, pics of bsg dog tags, pretty plz!

ooh lucky you. I wished we had the opportunity to travel. But then again I was 6 or so when he retired from the military along with my mom so I wouldn't remember if I did.

I wouldn't want to be one of those people who are continuously covered in oil and grease. Apparently that can corrode your skin and you get all blotchy. But waving my arms like the people in my pic would be cool (except they work like 18 hour days, some ridiculous amount of time).

still need to find my camers, but once I do pictures will definitely be posted.

Oh Lunie - we've been watching this - it has been awesome...and a little bit too real. My hubs leaves in July to be the JAG for a strike group out of Norfolk - he'll be stationed on the carrier with the Admiral - so this was really a look into what his life will be like for the next two years. We've been through deployments before but because of his career path it was 10 years ago! So the next two years should be an interesting ride to say the least :)

So glad someone else on my flist watched this!!!!

Wow, military life can be hard on a wife. I was watching with my mom and she had her tissue box in hand. It brought up a lot of memories for her. It makes me laugh but my parents met through the military. I guess they met in a bar and dated for the next 2 weeks and then he was deployed. They wrote each other letters while he was away. When he came back 9 months later he proposed, either that same day or the next. And they've been married for 25 years now. So they beat the odds I suppose.

Good luck with everything.

Thanks! What a beautiful story your parents have! My husband and I got engaged on Valentine's Day and then he left 10 days later to go on a six-month deployment! Needless to say, wedding planning and finishing up nursing school was very interesting :) It will be 10 years for us in January! :)

it's very cute. They still have a box of all the letters they sent to each other.

awwwwwww, that's awesome that you've been married for so long. I am so a believer in long term marriages.

I saw an ad for this at the movies and tooootally wanted to watch. Had no idea it was on yet. When does it air? And I've heardthat you can just be generalized as a military brat. When people don't feel the need to be specific I guess.

haha, totally. I see the planes and I keep wanting to call them vipers. And the guys on the flight deck are knuckledraggers, etc. My dad will point out all the real military stuff when we watch bsg and he can name them which is cool.
