Hi guys, how's it going? Life's been busy, with plenty of schoolwork left to do before the sweet release that is summer holiday. Nothing special, really.
So, uh, I'm kind of out of things to say...
...Let's talk about annoying things in fandom, shall we?
("YAAAAAAY!")
The next example is from Touhou (big surprise there), but the problem is widely common in most fandoms, so I'm sure everyone will get something out of it.
This is Ran Yakumo in canon.
We don't actually know that much about her, as she invariably ends up playing second banana to her master, Yukari, and in the games she's often reduced to little more than a weapon. However, what we do know about her is that she's calm, thoughtful, and highly intelligent, to the point of being a mathematical genius that when fulfilling her duties often approaches them by means of complex calculations, almost like a living computer. She also comes across as quite ambitious, and is happy to be Yukari's shikigami for the power it grants her rather than any sort of real loyalty. (Not that I can blame her, considering Yukari's hideously abusive treatment of her. Tell me, has there ever been an instance when beating up your underling for every tiny mistake they make and treating them like a tool rather than a person has actually been beneficial in the long run?) She really is powerful too, and even has her own shikigami despite being one herself.
Sounds interesting enough, right? Well, this is what Ran is like in 70% of fanon works:
Totally a logical interpretation, amirite?
(Of course, this isn't the only way she's portrayed in fanon! Other common treatments of the character include making her a streaker or a fluffy moeblob. And her canon personality does show up in about one per cent of all fanworks. Hooray!)
This actually isn't the most annoying fanon interpretation I've ever seen, but it weirds me out. Anyway, enough about me! Are there are fanon interpretation that just refuses to go away and really gets under your skin? Shared pain splits the pain in half, after all. =D
