Vincent Eriks Bennetts Gardiner

First thing's first: Vincent was a name Mary and Andrew both liked. Eriks is a Latvian name [Andrew is half Latvian] and I think, the name he used to call his grandfather, Bennetts is Andrews surname, which Mary didn't take when they got married, and Gardiner is our surname. Mary and Drew went with Gardiner 'cause they didn't see any logical reason that a kid has to have his father's name.

Mary went into hospital on Wednesday night, to be induced Thursday and yes, it was incredibly hard not to tell anyone. So I told some people. But no-one who would tell Mary they knew :) Sorry Mary!

Yesterday we didn't hear anything from 9am, when Andrew let mum know things were on the move, until Andrew started ringing people at about 5:00pm to let them know Vincent had been born at 4:07pm. Not hearing anything was hard. I admit that I may have sworn once or twice. Or a lot. I was impatient!

After work, Steph and I headed to Cammeray to meet mum and we all went to Hornsby to the hospital. I hate hospitals at the best of times and yesterday it felt like it took a million years to get to Mary, as she wasn't in her room.

Eventually we discovered that she was still in the birthing unit. Without going into too much detail, it was a hard birth and Mary was pale and shaky and pretty zonked when we finally saw her. Andrew was floating on cloud nine. I swear, all our conversations went like this: 'hey drew?' '... ... ... ...yeeeeeah'.

Vincent, my dear sweet Vincent :) He is great, he's little, SUPER soft and really cute.

And I cried. I didn't expect that.

He has a sore head and can't be cuddled too much in the next few days, but I held him for about half an hour last night and am pleased to report, he likes me.

The stats are:

He weighs 4.15kg (or 9.1 lbs), is 55cm long, and his head has a circumference of 37.5cm.

But I know why you're all here. So here goes:

I think Vincent looks a lot like Andrew's sister Nina here.

Three generations of Gardiner. We have: My younger sister Steph [aka Steve of poorstevie fame], my mooma and baby Vincent :)

This is my favourite photo so far. I was holding him or the first time. I sent this one to my dad, who was working yesterday but is coming down [up? I don't know, whenever I say I'm visiting somewhere, I say down. Who knows?!] today, and I think it might have been the straw that broke the strong, silent type camel's back, because mum got a gushing phone call :)

This is me and Vincent. I've found it hard not to hear Uma Thurman saying 'Vincent Vega' every time I say Vincent, and was horrified to discover Mary had never seen Pulp Fiction. This child clearly needs me in his life. Mary suggested we call him V, like V for Vendetta. I like that.
