The thing that really sticks out about Kefka is what a massive douchebag he is. I'm serious! This is a villain who takes absolute delight in the atrocities he commits. Poisoning the well water of a besieged castle? Aww yeah, let's sit here and soak up the screams of the dying. Torturing helpless espers and draining their powers? Hell, let's beat them while we're at it, we've got nothing better to do with our time. Ascending to godhood and attaining powers beyond man's wildest imaginings? Fuck, let's laser the shit out of everyone and everything.
Although unrepentant kitten punching is typical villain fare across all media, Kefka brings a more personal touch to the table. RPG antagonists have a tendency to be more like forces of nature than actual characters, but FFVI's final boss remains a total dickweed to the very end, as evidenced by my LJ cut text. You actually get to watch as he rises from a lowly henchman to the destroyer of the world, and he laughs in your face the whole time.
I don't know what Square was smoking when they came up with this guy, but it was obviously good and they need to buy more.
