SFWC Day 1

Feb 16, 2008 00:25

The first day of the San Francisco Writers Conference was a whirlwind, and a lot of fun. I was in conference activities nonstop from 10am to 10pm. A few highlights, briefly:

- Listening to author Clare Langley-Hawthorne and agent Randi Murray talk about how they met at the 2004 SFWC, decided to work together, and got a two-book deal with Viking. They traded off describing the steps of the process so we got to hear about how it works from both sides, and they were both excellent presenters.

- Hearing author Sheldon Siegel explain how to write great dialogue, agreeing with everything he said, and feeling like I'm already doing everything right.

- Attending a talk by Chris Baty about writing a novel in a month. I am such a NaNo groupie.

- Talking to a bunch of very cool fellow writers.

- Going to the open mic session and deciding to sign up to read tomorrow night.

- Seeing the Transamerica Pyramid from my hotel room. The Mark Hopkins is well situated at the top of a hill, and quite luxurious.
