What you both say is true.
On one hand: We -should- be responsible and make good choices for ourselves, but we are, unfortunately, very lazy. Image driven. More concerned with how much money something will cost, rather than the long term cost it will have on our health, the health of others, or the health of the planet.
But, big business killed the electric car because it would kill their profits. The government subsidizes corn, so American farmers all grow corn, so corn is so stupidly cheap and overabundant that it is squeezed into any product possible. There is change in other areas (like the end of tobacco commercials aimed at kids) but only when it became grossly obvious. Bottom line: we can't rely on the government and businesses, because they are only in business for themselves!
The answer is two-fold:
1. We must vote with our dollars that we want consumer products that are good for us.
2. We must vote petition those to change legislation so that the government actually supports what is good for us, rather than what is bad for us. Or we vote people in who will do it.
Sound like a lot of work? Ach, yes. I myself wake up hating the state of things very often, and cursing that there is all this work to do, and that I have to do it, and even that I am conscious enough to know there is work I have to do. Why can't I allow myself to stay ignorant and lazy? But I can't. So that's where we're at.
