If anyone is wearing an outfit like you linked to, i'd wonder if they were trolling for johns to feed their heroin habit. I mean...wtf? Those are *way* too short.
I thought you meant something like a walking short. Jayzus.
I like shorts, i think you can wear them about anywhere in the summer 'cause fuck being hot and fuck wearing jeans BUT. They're casual wear. Only wear them to casual things.
*not hiking, though - or camping. That's a good way to get brambled, stung, eaten alive by chiggers and etc. Save the skin for when you're skinny dipping.*
To be fair, what people are wearing in real life is usually a little more wearable than what the models in the mags are sporting, so probably, the shorts aren't all that short. One hopes. *shudders* I just have a gut reaction of "no, no, no, no!" to the idea of shorts as business wear, even if they're walking short length.
I agree with you about hiking and camping. Pants are for the woods; they work better than Off. LOL
Well, I do have to admit that if I were more comfortable with my figure, I might have worn shorts in the past decade LOL but I really don't miss them. I'll take a long, flowy skirt over shorts any day.
I am appalled at how short *everything* is now. Even for children. I have to search far and wide for clothes for my seven year old that aren't cut up to her teeny behind. I just. *hands* I'm not dressing my second-grader like a floozy, you know? And I hate it when grown ups dress that way too. Unless it's Halloween which everyone knows is Acceptable Cleavage/Short Skirt Day. :)
There are many reasons I am glad I don't have a child and that is one of them. I can't IMAGINE that you have a hard time finding age-appropriate clothes for a 7 year old. *shakes head*
I have a few pairs of really comfy Bermuda shorts that are pretty useful for hot summer days at cat adoption events. Pretty sure I will never wear them to work!
Pants are really hard to find because even pants intended for children are now low-rise. *boggles* Why? They don't even have hips at Emma's age. Low-rise just means pooled around her ankles. LOL It's ridiculous.
In the South, dressing for church is kinda like dressing for a garden party. I have been to churches where at business-meeting, some of the older ladies brought up asking people to leave (to leave! yes, this is the kind of church I grew up in *sigh*) becausee they weren't wearing dresses or long pants for guys. Or at least taking them aside and shaming them in such a way that they'd never want to return. I have some Southerners on my flist who that comment in my post was aimed at and I should have caveated by saying that obviously, church is the important part, not the clothes, and Lorraine is trying to write like David Sedaris and failing.
Although, I will admit that I do have a real hard time not doing the knee jerk (What is that person wearing? It's church!) reaction from time to time. Which I know is problematic.
I usually dress up for church, cos I like dressing up, but jeans or shorts are pretty much the norm at Abiding Peace. I don't think I've ever seen a man in a tie, and the only people who regularly wear skirts are me and a male cross-dresser.
The way it was presented to me as a kid is that if your body is a temple, you totally want to doll it up just like Solomon with those Lebanon cedars and also that when you wear your finest, it's to honor God (so conversely, not dressing up is disrespectful).
Honestly, as an adult, I think that sort of thinking is largely about class and privilege and gate-keeping, which is really gross and antithetical to what Christianity ought to be about.
I think I would not have kneejerk reaction if I were attending a congregation where everybody is dressed really casually. That would clearly and obviously be the norm.
I personally don't like the way shorts look (and feel -- they tend to ride up) on me (I don't have a problem with skirts except that I feel like I should shave my legs if I am going to show them off -- and I do not like pantyhose) but I feel like shorts shouldn't inherently be off-limits for professional dress -- though the pic you linked to with the high-waisted mini-shorts ... I'm not sure those shorts are ever appropriate anywhere.
I've never thought of shorts as inappropriate anywhere (my grandma used to complain about people being in casual summer dress -- i.e., short -- in church and I was so boggled that it would matter in church). I admit that I have a hard time imagining shorts being commonly accepted as professional attire, but that's mostly because I think of guys' hairy legs and instinctively feel that's unprofessional, but I know that's social conditioning about body hair (yes, I have internalized the societal norm of body hair being ugly, but I have failed to internalize the part about how that applies only to women)
( ... )
They ride up on me too, irrespective of weight and fitness. I stopped regularly wearing shorts when I was in eleventh grade and haven't really looked back.
I'm not sure those shorts arre ever appropriate anywhere.
*dies laughing*
I agree.
I get freaked out by men's body hair way more than women's. I do not like male underarm hair. Josh used to shave his which made me so happy and he's gone back to letting it grow freely. He's a pretty hairless dude, and so we're talking very little hair even unchecked, but it bothers me. I think because I imagine underarm hair as a kind of sponge that soaks up underarm sweat. *shrugs*
Elizabeth says I should also share my thought that shorts are inappropriate for going to the movies, not because it's socially inappropriate, but because movie theatres are way over air-conditioned, so if you wore shorts you would be cold.

HOWEVER. The new style of short-shorts with REALLY high heels is just unconscionable. I. Can't. Even.
