Chapter Index Chapter 18: Or Maybe Not
“Hurry up, will you?” Valda growled as he dragged Claudia through the ship’s many corridors.
“Yeah, ‘cause I’m going to run to my death.” Claudia said sarcastically, earning another rough shake from Valda. She would have tried to run or fight him, but the torture had severely weakened her. Something, she was sure, Valda had planned. Claudia bent her head in anger at her helplessness. The whole plan revolved around incapacitating her and ending her life. She didn’t understand how someone could hate her this much, to torture her and smile while doing it. How someone could hate Artie this much to torture her in front of him, knowing it caused him mind crushing guilt.
Artie.
Artie.
Claudia’s head shot up as she saw a familiar mop of salt and pepper curls hiding around a corner in a ship. Her breath began to come faster as she saw a short, stout figure shuffle back into the shadows to remain hidden. She bit down on her lip to conceal a smile of hope.
Unfortunately, Valda noticed her sudden change in spirit.
“What’s going on?” He said, one arm grasping her red hair by its roots, the other holding one of her arms. Just when Claudia decided to try and lie as much as she could to buy time, Artie stepped out of his hiding place.
“Let her go, Valda.”
“Artie!” Claudia said joyfully, not bothering to hide her giddiness at seeing him here, alive and unharmed. Well, relatively unharmed. He was soaking wet and his wrists bore the unmistakable signs of rope burn.
Valda snarled and grabbed her even tighter, one hand letting go of her hair and reaching to grab her other arm. He slid his hands down to her wrists, raising them up and then bringing them to her chest and pinning them there. He began walking backwards, dragging her with him.
“I said let her go.” Artie said in a deadly tone, walking towards Valda. Claudia struggled and tried to break out of Valda’s grip but he was fueled by desperation and fury, and he clung onto her.
“Don’t try anything, Arthur.” Valda threatened. “If you try to attack me, you’ll risk hurting Claudia.” His face broke out in a mocking smile. “And I know you’d rather let me walk away with her than have one hair on her head harmed.” He kicked open a nearby door, and Claudia felt her hair rise around her as the sea breeze blew in. Valda began to drag her back when he suddenly stopped. Claudia froze, wondering what was going on when she heard a man’s voice.
“And I know you’d rather live than die by getting your brains blown out by this shotgun.”
Claudia bowed her head to hide her smile.
Duke.

Audrey carefully stepped around the rubble that was previously the confining walls of her prison. She looked around the hallway that she had stepped into and began to walk down it cautiously. But then she stopped and went back to the pile of rubble, taking a large hunk of metal and holding it to her side like a weapon. She carefully began to walk down the hallway again.
“Hello?” Audrey clutched the hunk of metal to her as she heard a female voice calling out around her. “Hello?”
Quietly, Audrey hid in a corner and watched as a tall woman began walking toward her ruined prison, gun held high. The woman stopped and lowered her gun. “What the -Pete, I think - ” But suddenly she was smacked to the ground. She tried to get up but suddenly her hands were being pinned to the floor. She opened her mouth but whatever noise came out was muffled. In a second, Audrey knew what was happening.
She ran from the corner and launched herself to the space a few feet above the woman’s back. As she predicted, she felt herself collide with an invisible weight. They rolled off the woman's back and Audrey felt her limbs tangle with the invisible man’s. She rolled on top of him and pinned him to the floor.
“You killed my friends.” She said through gritted teeth. She raised her arm and slugged him as hard as she could. Although it only looked like she was hitting air, she could feel the warm flesh under her fist. As she hit him again and again, trying to subdue him, the man groaned with pain and became visible. Audrey dropped her fist in shock, and then raised it again, snarling.
“I shouldn’t even be surprised.” She said, looking down into the face of her attacker and the killer of Vince and Dave.
It was the Rev.

“I’m so glad you’re - ” Artie said, turning to Claudia and opening his arms, who threw herself into them.
“Ow, ow, ow...” Artie said, wincing yet hugging Claudia tightly.
“After they took you away...” She said, her voice shaking slightly as she remembered being left alone with Valda.
“Your friend saved me.” Artie said, backing away from the scene (but still clinging to Claudia) to show Duke, who was still busy tying up and gagging Valda with rope he had found in one of the emergency lifeboats.
“Duke...” Claudia said. “Thank you.” She would have hugged him too if Artie would let her go, but he seemed content to cling to her as if to shield her from any coming dangers.
“You owe me numerous shifts at the Gull. And whatever object you used to make my boat catch up with this one. I could seriously use that.” Duke said, but then stopped and looked down at the tied up Valda on the floor, who was glaring angrily at them. “Sooo, what do I do with him?”
“Leave him.” Artie said, his voice a growl as he stared down at Valda. “A group of Regents are coming on the boat to take all the members of the rebellion away. Our mission is to get Claudia and Audrey and get out. The Caretakers are the important part right now. We can deal with him,” Artie said, his voice a snarl as he looked down at Valda, “later.”
“Audrey?” Claudia said, slightly untangling herself from Artie. “She’s here, too?”
“Yeah.” Duke said. “After we left, Audrey was abducted. All odds are pointing to her being on the boat too. Also, some librarian woman was waving a mirror around and talking about it showing her where Audrey was.”
“Mrs. F?” Claudia said hopefully, looking at Artie.
“I didn’t catch her name but she was as creepy as hell.” Duke interjected.
“Sounds like her.” Artie said, gently touching his forehead to Claudia’s.
Claudia felt joy overwhelm her. Finally, after so long, they were okay. They were going to be ok-
“What the hell is that?” Duke asked as a crack in the floor suddenly appeared under his feet.
Or maybe not.
