Chapter 3: Subtlety is Dead
“So why are we out here again?” Audrey asked, tapping her fingers on the wheel of her car. She had been cramped in her car for two hours on the outskirts of Haven - with Vince and Dave, who were being annoyingly cryptic.
“Because Haven is going to have a visitor.” Dave said.
“A very important visitor.” Vince added.
“This wouldn’t be part of that mysterious limo drive that you two took after the funeral for the Chief - I mean Garland - would it?” Audrey asked suspiciously.
“Possibly.” Dave said.
“Are you ever going to tell Nathan and I about that?” Audrey asked. She wanted to trust Vince and Dave, but her nerves had been on the edge after they had driven away in the limo and come back, refusing to say anything about the event. Secrets in this town could get people killed - especially people that Vince and Dave were close to, a.k.a. her.
“Don’t worry, Audrey, all we have to do is escort her into town. Her driver can’t come within town limits. It’s complicated.” Vince said, seeing Audrey’s face.
“Should I know more about this visitor?” Audrey asked.
“We’re not sure yet.” Dave said, wincing as Vince elbowed him. Audrey’s suspicions deepened. “Don’t worry - she isn’t going to cause harm to the town or its residents.” The look on his face wasn’t exactly comforting, though.
‘They said “she.”’ Audrey thought. Well, at least she had some information to go off of.
“Where is Nathan?” Vince asked, not so subtly changing the subject. “We asked him to be here too.”
As much as Audrey hated to admit it, their distraction worked. Her mind switched over to the topic of Nathan’s absence as soon as he brought it up.
“He was all set to go, but the Rev. called him back to the office. He wants to talk.” Audrey said, anxiety hidden in her face but palpable in her voice. She hated leaving Nathan alone with the Rev. The Rev. didn’t like being disobeyed, and Nathan had already done so by not giving up his position as Chief. The Rev. could only mean trouble, Audrey knew. For Nathan, and for all Troubled people.
So shouldn’t she be there with her partner? Instead of by the side of some road with Vince and Dave in her too cramped car?
*
Nathan Wurnos sat at what was once his father’s desk, tapping his fingers on the wood, made rough after so many years of abuse from serving his father. He couldn't feel the wood, but the tapping was the best way to release his nerves - stretched to the breaking point because of the man in front of him.
“I’m glad you took the time to see me, Nathan.” The Rev. said, standing in front of Nathan’s desk. It was still hard for him to think of it as his, instead of his father’s. He half expected his father to walk in and yell at him to get out of his chair.
“Sit down.” Nathan said, gesturing to the chair opposite his desk. It took a second for him to realize that it sounded like an order. “Please.” He said grudgingly, hating the word the moment it left his lips.
“No thank you. I’m going to make our little conference short and quick.” Nathan didn’t say anything, his jaw clenched and only his eyes expressing his loathing for the Rev.
“Nathan, I believe that I was right to ask you to give up your position as the new Chief.” The Rev. started, looking over to Nathan who was still tapping his fingers on his desk.
“It isn’t fair to the people of Haven to ask them for someone in your...condition to govern them properly.”
“You’re afraid that because I’m Troubled I’ll abuse my power as Chief?” Nathan asked, cutting right to the heart of the issue.
“I simply feel that you won’t be as hard on the Troubled as you should be, considering that you are one of them.” The Rev. said. “Lord knows your father wasn’t.” Nathan’s jaw tightened even more.
“What we should do is...” The Rev. continued, looking down at Nathan and waiting, Nathan knew, for him to take the bait. He debated in his head for a few seconds while his fingers kept a staccato pattern on the desk, and, seeing no other way for information, finally asked the question that the Rev. had been waiting for.
“And what do you suggest we do with the Troubled?” Nathan asked, looking down at his desk, trying to focus on something, anything besides this man in front of him. He couldn’t lose his temper. He couldn’t lose his temper...
“Try to find them some redemption for their sins, and if that doesn’t work, then they should be removed from society so they don’t hurt anyone else.” The Rev. said swiftly.
“What, put them out on some island somewhere?” Nathan asked, his temper growing. He made himself study every detail in the desk. Every crack, every scratch, every scrape... He focused all his energy on the desk, trying to study it to keep his temper in check.
“That is the general idea, yes. They could be anywhere, actually, so long as they are removed from society.” The Rev. said.
“And you’re going to take them away from everyone they care about?” Nathan asked. “Take children away from their parents, husbands away from their wives?”
The Rev. hesitated. “We don’t quite know how the Troubles are passed yet, so in this occasion, nobody close to a Troubled person would be removed from each other-”
“You want to put the Troubled and everyone they care about in some dark little corner where you don’t have to think about them anymore?” Nathan asked, still staring down at his desk, but feeling his temper growing. “What if that doesn't work?”
“Then we’ll go to more extreme measures.” The Rev. said quickly. He had been thinking about this for a long time, Nathan could tell.
A long silence followed this statement, only punctured by Nathan asking a single question.
“You think you can dispose of us that easily?”
“You must step down, Nathan.” The Rev. said quietly. “You are only prolonging the inevitable.”
“Go to Hell.” Nathan said.
“That is what you’ll be doing.” The Rev. said, who still hadn’t lost his temper. “And if you don’t want to leave your position, then I have ways of making you leave.” Nathan looked up at the Rev. and saw why he was telling Nathan his plan - he wasn’t only bragging, he was warning Nathan. Warning Nathan not to go near him or try to mess up his precious plans. He had told Nathan his entire plan knowing that nobody would truly believe him - or else think that it could never happen. Well, almost nobody. Nathan did have one person who absolutely trusted him...
“Such as?”
There was a long pause, and when the Rev. spoke again, it was with a gleeful malice. “I’ve noticed that Audrey Parker seems to be very mixed up in the business of the Troubled. She shouldn’t be allowed to be part of this police force either - or this town.” He said, noticing the muscles in Nathan’s eyes flashing and his fingers stopping their pattern of tapping on the desk. “Maybe she should be the first one removed from the town...” He was cut off as Nathan leaped up out of his chair, eyes gleaming and chest heaving as if he had just run a marathon.
“You stay away from her, you hear me?” He yelled at the Rev., forcing himself to stay behind the desk. If he left its boundaries than he would attack the Rev. He would throw himself at him and just pound his fists into his flesh... “YOU STAY AWAY!”
This was one of the reasons he hadn’t wanted Audrey coming to this meeting. If the Rev. saw how he was with her, the way he treated her, worse, if the Rev. knew how much influence she had over him, just because she smiled in a certain way, laughed at his jokes, could make him actually feel... The Rev. knew so much... What if he knew that Nathan could feel Audrey?
Only Audrey.
And the Rev. had once said that he had friends...powerful friends...friends that, no doubt, could hurt the ones that Nathan cared about...could hurt Audrey.
“You can’t protect everyone.” The Rev. said, opening his door so that Nathan couldn’t attack him without the whole Haven. P.D. watching him. Some cops were already staring at his office, having heard Nathan’s shouts through the door. “Once of these days, you’ll make a mistake. You’re only human, Nathan. Or less than it.” He turned to leave the office, and then turned around once more.
“And about the visitor that you and Audrey are expecting today - I wouldn’t trust her either. Her soul is as dark as yours is. Her sinfulness will drag the the Troubled down with her.” And with a deliberate smirk the Rev. left his office.
