It took me ages to figure it out too! Well still no idea if I do it "properly" but it works to keep stitch numbers, that's good enough for me. :) So, the trick is, after you make the slip stitch & the one chain, the 1st single crochet of the new row must be worked into the same stitch as the slip stitch was. Then put the stitch marker into the top of this new sc, and do the whole round. When you finish the row, the marker will help you to put the slip stitch to the right place (there will be a stitch-like thingy that must be skipped - it doesn't belog to the current row but is the joining of the previous row). This way, if you count the top of the stitches, it will be the correct number. However, if you count on the sides, the joining will appear like an extra stitch - but that doesn't matter as you are working the new stitches to the tops.
Anyway, if you find it easier, the legs can be done in spirals too - but then the tops will be a little assymmetric so the first row to tie them together won't be so pretty.
Hope I can finish the 10th Doctor pattern today, though you might not need it! :) Please show me pics Rose when she's ready!
