Turkey Highlights Part 1

Mar 15, 2009 21:32

It's been almost 2 months since my trip and except for the one update I've not written anything down!! Think I better write down my highlights for Turkey before I forget everything..

In Turkey, we went to the following places : Istanbul, Troy, Ephesus, Pammukkale, Cappadocia and Mamaris

Istanbul was of course amazing. Blue Mosque and Hagia Sohpia were the most amazing structures ever. The Blue Mosque was one of the most beautiful piece of architect I ever saw and the serenity of it was amazing. As for Hagia Sohpia, it was quite grand once you stepped inside. The grounds were not that well maintained but the interior was amazing. You really have to wonder at how the ancient Romans built all those fantastic buildings. One of the other things we did was to take a cruise down the Bosphorus which was a rather relaxing way to enjoy Turkey. It seemed to be the thing for couples to do cos we saw quite a few Turkish couples, it was also one of the cheapest way to enjoy Istanbul.

Troy was a must go for us though we read and heard that it was mostly ruins, which it was. Our guide was totally fantastic though, he wrote a book on the excavations that took place and he was so knowledgeable!! He was also funny and cracked a lot of silly jokes which was quite entertaining. If you didn't already know, there was indeed a war though no traces of any wooden horse has been found, and it was fought purely for strategic reasons rather than any romantic notions of over the most beautiful woman in the world.

Ephesus is and I think will always be one of the most beautiful cities I ever visit. It's quite amazing really how the ancient Romans built such an amazing city out of marble. As it was winter we pretty much had the place to ourselves, though it rained terribly at the start of our tour the sun came out at the appropriate time and gave us wonderful lighting which was perfect for taking photographs. Our guide was also pretty good, giving us rather interesting anecdotes about the ancient Romans, like how they will get their slaves to warm up the toilet seats since they were made from marble. She was another good guide we had
