LUMOS SORTING APPLICATION

Name: Stephanie

Age (13 or up; we stick to LJ rules): Yes, I'm freshly 30

Location: Kentucky, USA

Where did you hear about this community? (Please tell us which
lj user recommended you for he/she shall be given a point.) I learned about your community from kaz814.

How much time are you willing to invest in this community? I am on the internet constantly (and I'm my own boss, so I can't get in trouble for it). I typically check LJ several times per day. I would be willing and able to dedicate no less than 15 quality minutes per day (unless I ultimately achieved some leadership role- in which case I could up it).

PART 1 - Canon

1. Have you read all the books? Yes. I've read them all, and have them all on CD so that I can listen to them when I travel for work.

2. Give us your personal interpretation of each Hogwarts house (in
terms of atmosphere, mentality, intra-house relationships et cetera -
these are just a few examples).

Gryffindor: I picture the Gryffindors as a house full of jocks who "mean well" but often act before they think. I see Sirius Black as the ultimate Gryffindor (despite his Black heritage): bold, charismatic, fate-tempting, but sometimes lacking the dedication or circumspection to act wisely. I see their relationships strained with Slytherin because of Slytherin's natural tendency to "Wait and see" and to take action when they are forced (and have had time to analyze a situation) rather than rushing into a burning house. I think that Gryffindors would naturally be suspicious of Slytherins. I think that Gryffindors would also have some natural tension with Ravenclaws, who they would (again) percieve as too detached/restrained, and would view as "hoity-toity"/in a glass tower. I don't think that the Gryffindors would really LIKE the Hufflepuffs, so much as they would find them useful- eager followers/helpers to appreciate their bravado and carry out their schemes.

Slytherin: I see the Slytherins as quiet, subtle and mentally adept students. On a practical level, I'd put their intellect on par with the Ravenclaws (although perhaps not as "book smart"). Unlike Gryffindors, they would see value as much value in keeping their strengths hidden as their weaknesses. I think that there would be a strong tendency toward being insular and independent. However, on the whole, I think that Slytherins would get along better with the other houses than Gryffindors because they don't have the need for blatant dominance that the Gryff's do. I think that their natural allies would be the Ravenclaws, who would have the same sort of "style" for human interaction. I think that the Slytherins could also admire Hufflepuffs for their loyalty (which is something that the Slytherins must posess out of necessity) although they probably feel that they are "Better than" the Badgers.

Ravenclaw: I see the Ravenclaws as they are stereotypically portrayed: Bookish and reserved- although I'd be willing to bet that there are Ravenclaws who manifest their intelligence in arenas outside of the classroom. There are probably some very gifted artists and musicians as well. I percieve the Ravenclaws as being very fond of order and routine and following the rules. I think that they would naturally clash with Gryffindors, who they see as hotheaded. They would be suspicious of Slytherins, but probably able to co-exist (and probably many Ravenclaws could have been Slytherins and vice-versa). I don't think that they would have much to think one way or the other about Hufflepuff.

Hufflepuff: I see the Hufflepuffs as the sorts of people who make up in tenacity and dedication what they lack in natural talent and gifts. I doubt that they are the most accomplished individuals, but make up very strong teams. Their natural tendency to help, and to communicate means that, while they aren't the most popular or charismatic, they don't have strong enemies either. I would expect Hufflepuffs to gravitate naturally toward Gryffindors, who they see as strong and want to please. I think that, while they could easily be used by Slytherins, the Hufflepuffs would share an appreciation for loyalty which could forge some bonds. I think that the Hufflepuffs would be put off by Ravenclaw isolationism and intellectual snobbery.

3. What would be your favourite flavour of Bertie Bott’s Every
Flavour Beans and why (note: as the name implies, all possible flavours
exist)? My favorite flavour of Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Bean would be burnt popcorn...if I liked jelly beans.

4. If you were on your House’s Quidditch Team, which position would
you preferably play and why? My favorite position would be seeker because I could be independent, and could focus on a single objective (finding the snitch) rather than trying to keep track of everything going on in the game and playing hard strategy.

5. (Optional) What HP conspiracy theory do you hold true unless it
is textually proven otherwise? (i.e. Snape is a vampire, Ron is
Dumbledore, etc. -there are loads of these theories. Feel free to contribute
your own)?

Most of my conspiracy theories were negated by HBP and by JKR's mugglenet interviews (I was CONVINCED that Ginny was a horcrux!). I'm currently fond of the idea that Regulus Black was a metamorphamagus (Since we know it runs in the Black family) who was sent to "be" Dumbledore for the final school year (which is why he had the note in the locket) and that the real Dumbledore isn't the one who bought it- it was a ploy to bring the Dark Lord out of hiding (since he thought that his worst enemy had been defeated), although I can also see strong textual arguments against this.

6. (Optional. If you can't answer #5, make sure you answer this
one.) What is your favorite book aside from HP and why?
My favorite books apart from HP is probably "The Mists of Avalon" by Marion Zimmer Bradley. It is a retelling of the King Arthur Legend from the perspective of his sister, Morgane le Faye- who has always been portrayed as a villian. She explains her actions throughout many of the major episodes of the legend and demonstrates that the difference between hero and villian is often one of perspective.

7. What would your Room of Requirement look like?
Apart from it looking exactly like Hagrid's Hut...it would change every time that I entered, but would usually contain a window with a storm raging outside, a large, comfortable couch, piano music playing softly, and stacks of paper, paints, and supplies to create with.

8. Describe your wand and tell us why you picked that design.
My wand is 11 inches, rosewood with Veela hair, great for transfiguration. My wand is graceful and delicate, and useful for transforming the appearance of things around me.

What's Your Personality Type?

10. Who do you admire most and why?
I admire British Polar Explorer Robert F. Scott (who led a doomed expedition to the South Pole) because of the way that he held to his ideals to the bitter end, despite the fact that he had obviously failed, and everyone who he was leading was certainly going to die. I’m so impressed that he kept his journal until the day that he (presumably) died, and the manner in which he expressed himself.

11. What would you like to have accomplished at the end of your
life?

I would like to hold a political office. My initial foray will probably be to run for county judge (I’m a lawyer), but after that, I would like to attempt to gain a seat in the state and perhaps ultimately Federal legislature.

12. Would you sooner commit a crime against your kin or your
countrymen?

That would depend very much on the circumstances. If someone in my family had done something unspeakable, or that was going to get /me/ in trouble, I’d probably turn on them. However, I am of the “Blood is thicker than water” school. I tend to identify myself first and foremost as a member of my family, then my community, then my state, etc, and my loyalty goes out from there.

13. What would your animagus be and why?
My animagus would be a fox: small but quick and clever.

14. What would your patronus be and why?
My patronus would be a bat: something scary and dark that is able to weild a great deal of power through perception alone, and because it is quick .

15. What career would you consider if you were indeed part of the
wizarding world and why?
My first choice would be to work in the Ministry of Magic, preferably with the Wizengamut.
