LUMOS SORTING APPLICATION
Name: Courtney Ann
Age (13 or up; we stick to LJ rules): 15
Location: North Carolina
Where did you hear about this community? I did an LJ search for interests for Harry Potter. =P
How much time are you willing to invest in this community? Seeing as it‘s summer, not much currently because I‘m frequently out of town. When school starts, however, I‘ll probably be able to invest more time, especially with discussions and such.
PART 1 - Canon
1. Have you read all the books? About 12,000 times each.
2. Give us your personal interpretation of each Hogwarts house (in
terms of atmosphere, mentality, intra-house relationships et cetera -
these are just a few examples).
To me, Slytherin is a very arrogant, conceited house. Most of the members view themselves as better than others. I don‘t think I could ever trust anyone from Slytherin; it seems to me as if they would choose themselves over their peers. Although intelligent, the concern for themselves make Slytherins use their intelligence to further themselves instead of actually doing something worthwhile.
The main characteristic associated with Gryffindor is bravery, and while I most certainly agree, I also tend to view Gryffindor as a house for those that are quite intelligent (or, rather, clever). In order to get out of situations that require bravery, intelligence is also needed, so I believe that the Gryffindors are picked not only because they are brave, but also because they have brains. Gryffindors are also very loyal, and very committed, which in turn makes them brave. They’re willing to risk themselves to do what’s right, or to solve a problem.
Ravenclaws are viewed as very intelligent, but to me, I get the vibe that their intelligence makes them a bit snobby, in the sense that, “ I know more than you so I’m better than you. Ha.” I don’t really see them as being very friendly to other houses because of this, and while they love to learn and that is very admirable, I think that they need to get off their tooshes and actually live life instead of reading about this theory or that experiment.
I’ve never really given much thought to Hufflepuffs. They are, of course, very kind and caring, but other than that, they just seem like the fourth house, the house that those who don’t particularly show the other qualities are put into.
3. What would be your favourite flavour of Bertie Bott’s Every
Flavour Beans and why (note: as the name implies, all possible flavours
exist)? My answer is boring and simple, I‘m sorry, but I‘d have to say chocolate. Chocolate can make anything better, and I love being happy. So I‘d definitely have to say chocolate. Or, some kind of alcoholic drink such as a Pina Colada, Strawberry Daiquiri, or Margarita…because I don’t drink (it‘s so irresponsible. blech.), but I’ve always wanted to know what an alcoholic version of those drinks would taste like. I think it’d be a plus to get the taste without the alcohol.
4. If you were on your House’s Quidditch Team, which position would
you preferably play and why? I‘d probably be a Seeker. While I don‘t necessarily like to be the center of attention, I‘m very independent and would therefore enjoy the part of the game that doesn’t necessarily involve the whole team. Also, I perform better under pressure, and therefore having the outcome of the game basically resting on my shoulders would enable me to play better.
5. (Optional) What HP conspiracy theory do you hold true unless it
is textually proven otherwise? (i.e. Snape is a vampire, Ron is
Dumbledore, etc. -there are loads of these theories. Feel free to contribute
your own)? I‘m not sure if this counts, but I don‘t think that Sirius is dead (or I refuse to let myself believe it). Since he was only Stupefied and therefore fell behind the Veil, and not actually killed, I don’t believe that he won’t be brought back somehow
6. (Optional. If you can't answer #5, make sure you answer this
one.) What is your favorite book aside from HP and why? This is such a hard question for me, because I‘ve read about a bazillion books and I love them all almost equally. I guess I‘d have to go with Old Magic by Marianne Curley. It is fantasy and deals with time travel, both of which fascinate me. Reading it takes me to an entirely different universe and I am completely enthralled at the characters‘ knowledge and abilities. It is also about an experience that I would die to have. Also, the main characters ‘save the day‘, which is always awesome. I long for adventure and knowledge magic and romance, and this book has all of these, which is probably why I like it so much.
7. What would your Room of Requirement look like? Apart from looking exactly like Hagrid’s hut, it‘d probably be an enormous library with zillions of books, a fireplace, and a big, comfy, leather arm chair that I could curl up in for hours just reading. The books would be mostly fantasy, of course: stories of adventure and heroines and happy endings. I need a chance to escape, and seeing as my life is short of mystery and excitement, these books would definitely be my chance for adventure and such.
8. Describe your wand and tell us why you picked that design. 8 inches, maple, phoenix feather. Eight inches because it’s compact and would be easy to carry around; maple because it’s sturdy but also
‘attractive’; and phoenix feather because wands with phoenix feathers seem to go to wizards who are capable of great power--something that is a wonderful asset if used for good and not bad.

What's Your Personality Type? 10. Who is your role model and why? I don’t have just one role model. There are so many people that I aspire to be like, each for their own reasons. To list a few? JKRowling, of course, because she created her own world and her own characters that is beyond anything that I could ever have imagined. My mother, because she gives everything she has to make my sisters and I as happy as possible. My father, because he grew up in a small town and with very little and took the opportunities he was given and ran with them, and now we are very blessed. I also admire everyone in the US Armed Forces, because, while I hate war, doing what they do requires immense amounts of bravery and commitment. To be honest, I think that if I took one trait from every person I’ve ever met or read about, and combined them all together, I would have my role model. As for now, I just want to be the best person I can be.
11. What would you like to have accomplished at the end of your
life? I’d like to have written a novel and had it published. I also want to have done something amazing to change the world, or at least someone’s life. When I die, I want to be remembered for something. I want to have traveled the world, to have learned as much as I can, and to have passed this knowledge on.
12. Would you sooner commit a crime against your kin or your
countrymen? My countrymen. While I would rather not have to chose, my kin are definitely closer to me. I could never betray my own blood, it‘s unthinkable to me. Also, seeing as I view my closest friends as kin, they are included in my answer to these, even though they aren‘t actually blood related. I could never betray someone I care about, and therefore, could never commit a crime against them. /b>
13. What would your animagus be and why? A dog: they‘re fun and playful, but also very intelligent. A dog would also be a very sensible animal to be, seeing as they‘re loved universally, and also capable of getting around well, quickly and efficiently
14. What would your patronus be and why? My patronus is a horse. They’re brave and sturdy, and a creature I’ve always thought to be very protective. They’re beautiful creatures, both smart and capable.
15. What career would you consider if you were indeed part of the
wizarding world and why? I‘d be an Auror. I love taking risks, and I believe that to battle the Dark Arts is one of the most honorable jobs. Also, to sit behind a desk seems a bit boring to me. I want to do something worthwhile with my life, and I’d love to be able to save someone from being wronged against.
