LUMOS SORTING APPLICATION

Name: Britta

Age (13 or up; we stick to LJ rules): Nearly fifteen.

Location: Pennsylvania.

Where did you hear about this community? (Please tell us which
lj user recommended you for he/she shall be given a point.) I was just browsing and stumbled across it...

How much time are you willing to invest in this community? I'll come by as often as I am online, probably.

PART 1 - Canon

1. Have you read all the books? Of course! As well as Quidditch Through the Ages, Fantastic Beasts, and The Ultimate Unofficial Guide to the Mysteries of Harry Potter.

2. Give us your personal interpretation of each Hogwarts house (in
terms of atmosphere, mentality, intra-house relationships et cetera -
these are just a few examples).

Slytherins, at first glance, are obviously people who look after themselves before anyone else. There are certain degrees of this sense of self-preservation, however. Some, like Tom Riddle, calculate their every move throughout the day and figure out a way that it could be beneficial to them. Others only pick apart more crucial situations this way. Though Slytherins are disliked by most of the houses, Ravenclaws seem like they would be a more likely ally, because their strengths are centered around their own personality traits, unlike Hufflepuff and Gryffindor, who are sorted according to how they interact with others.

Ravenclaws are intellectuals, either the know-it-all type who absorb facts and figures from books, or the clever, witty kind who are always a delight to have in circles of friends. There isn't much canon mention of the Ravenclaw personality, but my impression of them is that their mind can either separate them from their schoolmates or make them desirable companions, depending on how they use it.

Hufflepuffs, like Ravenclaws, get lost in the fray in the ever-raging battle between Slytherin and Gryffindor, and therefore aren't mentioned as much in canon. Cedric Diggory and Ernie Macmillan are two characters who give the most insight as to the Hufflepuff's personality. Justice and fairness prevail in the Hufflepuff house... these are the kids who "tattle-taled" in grade school, but by now have probably learned a more effective (and less annoying) way of making sure wrongdoers get what they have coming. They seem like they would be hard workers who make an honest living. Hufflepuffs are probably best affiliated with Gryffindors.

Gryffindors, of course, are known best for being noble and putting others before themselves. Therefore, they dislike Slytherins. There are times when putting others first is a good thing, but when a greater goal is trying to be achieved (for example, Harry trying to save Sirius), it can be their downfall.

3. What would be your favourite flavour of Bertie Bott’s Every
Flavour Beans and why (note: as the name implies, all possible flavours
exist)? Margherita. I would say something like Apple Pie, but I imagine that I don't like the taste as much as the texture, and it might taste odd in a bean. Besides, Margherita is my favorite Jelly Belly flavor.

4. If you were on your House’s Quidditch Team, which position would
you preferably play and why? I'm not fantastic at sports, but I've been involved in soccer, field hockey, and track. When I played all of these, defense was my strength, so I'm going to say I'd be a good Keeper.

5. (Optional) What HP conspiracy theory do you hold true unless it
is textually proven otherwise? (i.e. Snape is a vampire, Ron is
Dumbledore, etc. -there are loads of these theories. Feel free to contribute
your own)? I have a lot, each as unlikely as the next... but the one I hold true to is that Rita Skeeter might be a man. They make several references as to her "mannish hands" and "curiously rigid curls"... and I've noticed that when JKR really enforces something in her books, she wants it to be rememberd as it will be important later on. That's why I also think that Neville had his memory modified early on in his life (perhaps to keep him from remembering what happened to his parents?) and that's why he's so forgetful.

6. (Optional. If you can't answer #5, make sure you answer this
one.) What is your favorite book aside from HP and why? Like the Red Panda... I love how Andrea Seigel writes about a girl who doesn't-- or can't-- look at the world through rose-colored glasses. Everything is so raw, and her explanation makes the protagonist's actions almost justifiable.

7. What would your Room of Requirement look like? Apart from it looking exactly like Hagrid's hut, it would be a giant library like the one in Disney's Beauty and the Beast. You know, big ladder that goes all the way around, ceiling-to-floor windows, and full of every book I've ever read and more that I haven't but would like to read. There'd be a chaise longue and several armchairs, a writing desk with writing materials and art supplies, and an easel with watercolors. And a piano.

8. Describe your wand and tell us why you picked that design. Holly, because it's my Druid birth tree, with a dragon heartstring core (which is good for hexes).

What's Your Personality Type?

10. Who is your role model and why? Tori Amos... because:

1) Of the way she views the world. She sees things for what they are. She's been through a lot for one woman: a rape, trying to be what the 80's music buisness wanted her to be, utter humiliation, several pregnancies ending in stillbirths, a bitter battle with her record company, and more. And she's still up and running at 41, still gorgeous and married and a good mother. And still in touch with every bit of herself.

2) Of her music. I don't understand all of it, but what I do understand has changed my life. She views the songs as seperate beings and understands that they don't come from her... she channels them. She writes them down and vocalizes them. But they are not hers.

3) Of her heritage. She has one full-blooded Cherokee great-great-grandparent on each side of her family. She knows the story of Margaret Little, her grandfather's grandmother who raised him and told him the stories of how she survived the Trail of Tears and the Civil War. This woman was preparing for the North to come through and burn her village to the ground; she buried enough seed and dried beef to feed her family in the once place she knew those Christian Northerners wouldn't desecrate: the cemetary. And unlike her white Christian neighbors, who said that God would protect them, she survived because she did something.

11. What would you like to have accomplished at the end of your
life? Figuring out how to make myself happy. It seems like every time I figure me out, something changes... I'm not interested in being a nice person, I want to be seen as a responsible person that's balanced.

12. Would you sooner commit a crime against your kin or your
countrymen? My countrymen. I'd feel too guilty commiting a crime against my kin because they all know me personally.

13. What would your animagus be and why? A cat, most likely... I grew up with three, and now we have just one. I love that they don't depend on humans to survive, but they hang around because they'd rather use us than not. I've got a lot of catlike qualities... I'm not a great swimmer, I love to run and climb and being able to be a cat would just enhance those abilities. Plus, if I needed to, I could get a family to take me in. It could come in handy.

14. What would your patronus be and why? Aside from the fact that a person's patronus being the same as their animagus, I think a swarm of bees would be appropriate. The goddess Artemis' priestesses were called "Melissae" which means "bees", and she herself was called "Melissa", or "Queen Bee"... and after all, as the ultimate independent woman, Artemis is my favorite goddess.

15. What career would you consider if you were indeed part of the
wizarding world and why? I've always thought about pursuing journalism, and the Daily Prophet is like a step above a normal newspaper... within the magical world, the subject matter would be so much more interesting. And I'm a fiend for pop culture... I love to know what's going on in the world.
