I came home from school and took a nap before heading to work.
I dreamt that a friend from school and I were attempting to investigate a mystery that occurred 20 years ago. There was an old journal from a man named Marius who wrote about having done something on March 1st that was vague and cryptic for us to understand. We had determined a way to use time travel, and intended to go back in time together to figure out what he had done. After some investigation, we managed to discover the date.
Our time travel was based around dialing a phone number specifying the date and time of the event we wanted to reach. It was limited in that the individuals who went back in time couldn't go forward. The failsafe for the time travel was that we would maintain messages for the future to explain the situation we were investigating for our future selves. With the information and the warning not to go back in time, our future selves would continue on in the present.
This student, Lauren, and I went back in time and found ourselves in an old lavish hotel and in it was the man we sought, Marius, who owned a penthouse suite. Through a series of events, he managed to kidnap my friend and the two of us were separated as I returned to the present without her. I'm not sure how I returned, but somehow I wound up back in the present.
I set off with the goal of going back to retrieve her and rescue her from him. I enlisted the help of another friend, who was faculty at the school to help me conduct the historical research about the situation. The biggest problem is that without my friend, I could not determine the exact date of the event when we had called. She had been the one to determine the date. The journal also did not help, as its date of print was clearly different from the years in which it had been written in.
Finally, my friend Paul suggested that the phone's call history could give us the date. Looking through, I found that it could. Together, we traveled back in time 20 years and arrived in the past to retrieve Lauren. However, I found that Lauren had met her counterpart in the past, one who was infatuated with Marius, and whom Marius had seduced. When confronting both of them, they clearly understood that we were from the future, and though Marius's actions were our original concern, he teasingly directed us to finding Lauren while her younger self expressed a great interest in seeing the future. I tried to warn her that Marius was up to no good, but she seemed too immersed in her dream world to care.
She explained that when her future self had arrived, Marius reported her as an intruder in their home and when she could not ID herself (as she claimed to be Lauren while her younger self was in a greater position to prove her claim to her identity), she was locked away in a mental institution. The caretaker of the suite, a portly good-natured woman, gave me the information of which room she was in and where the asylum was located, as I needed an address to intercept them by going back in time. She elected to come with us and we consented.
As we reached the ground floor of the hotel, we entered the main floor and I saw my sister leaving the building and attempted to say hello to her. I then noticed that my entire family was there, all as young as they were 20 years ago, celebrating something in the hotel. I first saw my Uncle Mak, before he had married my aunt, young and healthy, and I ran up to him, hugging him and asking how he was. Because of my age, he did not recognize me and passed me by later when one of the family members gave him the new baby (the cause of the celebration) to admire. It was another family member, a new nephew, on his side who I did not recognize.
It was then that I saw my dad standing in the hotel and I decided to approach him more calmly without revealing my identity. I introduced myself and he seemed a bit confused by my clothing but talked to me nonetheless. We walked a bit around the main floor and I couldn't remember the year and asked him some questions to help me, such as asking if he was a single man still or if he had married yet. He answered that he was married, helping me confirm that he had already had me. I continued to speak with him and then let slip by calling him "Dad." He seemed to indicate that he had already deduced that I was his son somehow.
Sensing that my time in the past was limited, I tried to take the opportunity to warn him about so many things. Mot importantly I told him to tell Uncle Mak to enjoy life and have fun, but to be careful about his consumption of burnt meat and other things that could contribute to his debilitating cancer int he present. In doing so, I began to cry hysterically, all while trying to tell my dad what to do and how to try to prevent the awful things that were happening.
I was forced to leave and I began cleaning up my things to start on our mission to reach Lauren and bring her back to the present. The people we had gathered had grown impatient due to my excursion and were rushing me. Irritated because of how upset I was, I began telling them to shut up. Finally, Rosie O'Donnell appeared, chastising me for what I was doing in the past, fully aware that we were not in our own time. She tried to console me and I admitted that I had tried to warn my father of the future and I doubted it would be successful. She mentioned that she had seen me grow up and that now other things were important that I needed to focus on. She began, "Well first, there's the business--" and then I woke up.
The dream really upset me, and I woke up panicked and breathing hard for several minutes. Later on, thinking about my attempts to warn my father of all the illness that our family was facing now and how to prevent it, I started crying. I started sobbing in the car on my way to work. I don't cry often, and I think the last time I did it in earnest was maybe 3 years ago, so it's been a pretty stressful day so far.
