Citizens of Luministi! I come before you today with news of the gravest sort!

[a likely now-familiar dark-haired girl appears on the CATs and vidscreens of every resident, her arms thrown out to her sides in her usual theatrical manner, but her expression is very grim indeed]As you know, our fair town has experienced two maliciously malignant ( Read more... )

[Verita seems to have a fan.]

What a hot-blooded speech from our brave poet-heroine!

[looks up, surprised] You think I'm a heroine? [sniffs]

You sounded like one just now! I could feel the heat of your burning soul in your passionate words, even in such an emotional moment! It was so cool!

[can't help a smile at that] Thank you! But I have a very important job to do, you know. [sniffs again] Especially now that people have...have died.

I heard about that. Has anyone come forward with anything useful? If I knew anything I'd say it, but I just got here. It's the worst possible timing because the first suspect is almost always the person who nobody knows!

[blinks] You think they'll blame you? But there isn't any evidence for that. And you're going straight to the heroes, right? We know you want to help!

[lowering her voice] If you're worried, you shouldn't say this too loudly, but people are telling me they think Doctor Resarci has been doing it. I thought he was a good man!

I was pointing out that in most stories like this, any outsiders are usually the first ones to get the blame. It's the easiest answer because in a small town everyone knows each other, and most people don't want to think that they've been living with and trusting a criminal for such a long time.

[Also kind of hushed now:] That's just what I mean! If it's someone you trust doing these things, it makes the plot even more tragic than if it had been some deviant outsider. Nobody wants to learn that kind of thing!

What makes them think it's the doctor, though? I'd think that a doctor wouldn't be so messy.

You're right! But we can't just let this go on. Whoever the murderer is, they've got to be stopped!

Doctor Resarci needed their help getting the antidote when poison got out--he couldn't find it himself. And he's been having trouble getting evidence analyzed from the murder scenes. He might be delaying the investigations on purpose.

That sounds more like evidence that he's not very good at his job than that he's a killer.

[Casually;] It would be pretty terrible if he was just distracted and had a murder pegged on him for it. Has anyone asked him what the hold-up is?

[frowns thoughtfully] Maybe, but Doctor Resarci's the best around!

I don't think so. That's why I, the vivacious and valiant Verita, will confront the murderer myself!

I bet he is! But it's easy to be the best around if you're the only one around!

[And hushed again:] What are you going to do once you find him?

Oh, he's not just the best in town! Luministi only has the best in every field, you know. Like me. I'm the best at the news! [beams proudly]

[frowns] Well, I'm gonna talk to him, and...and get evidence! For the sheriff. So he can come arrest him! See? It'll be perfect.

Oh. I guess that all makes sense.

... But what if he attacks you or there are multiple bad guys?

[looks a bit frightened, but then she shakes her head, though she still sounds a bit nervous] He wouldn't attack me. Daddy wouldn't let him.

Really?

I don't know what kind of powers he has, but I'd think that if he could assure that nobody could attack you, he'd do the same for the people you care about like that bartender. Or he'd at least want to do everything he could to keep you from getting upset!

I'd never want my sweet little daughter to get caught up in a murder mystery! At least not unless I knew that she was cut-out for the role of a magical girl detective instead of the star of a nerve-calming or comedic slice of life series!

Well, if I had one, anyway.

Well... [looks a bit shifty. whispers] He doesn't know I'm doing this either.

But if anything happened to me, Daddy would get so upset he'd find the murderer right away! So nobody would try anything.

But Andre... [sniffs] We can't let more murders like that happen. And if nobody's stopped the murderer yet, that's why we have to step in. See?
