It'd been a difficult first semester.

In September, Albus wrote frequently to his parents, relaying some of the things he was learning in school, of his pleasant Fridays visiting Hagrid for tea (though the cakes were horrible, and he wishes he didn't have to eat them out of politeness) and how his favourite subjects were Potions and History of Magic, even if he was certain Professor Binns made it his after-life’s goal to make students hate it.

He left out the bit where one of the Slytherin students had put something into his lunch when he’d gone to the bathroom for a moment, or how he could swear he heard people whispering about him as he walked past them to get to class one time.

In November, Albus stopped writing. He felt guilty and stupid, and didn’t have any other nice things to say. He didn’t want to write that he’d been followed around by some of the Slytherin students whose families still had ties (and memories) to the war, some who refused to leave him alone when they told him his dad was responsible for their families being in Azkaban. For their being dead. (Did he ever think about that, when he was living in fame and fortune, Mr Son-of-the-Hero, with everything he could ever want?)

It didn’t last terribly long, particularly after James had a stern word or three with some of them, but Albus remembers thinking (and wishing he could take it back, even in thought) that he could be someone else. Just for a while, he hated his father and he hated being Albus Potter.
