Weekend adventure

I'm very happy that even though I am getting sick (sore, swollen throat right now, but maybe I can beat it without having to go into the hospital) we have enjoyed a very active weekend thus far.

Friday we had a tasty buffet dinner at Royal India before we hit the cinema to see Sicko. The theatre was pretty empty, but then why would Kiwi's want to watch a movie about how messed up the American system of healthcare is? After watching that movie I can not express how lucky (and guilty) I feel to be living in NZ. This is not the first time I felt this, but it just really hit it home. To hear stories of people who died because their insurance wouldn't pay for their necessary treatment is tragic. The past few days I've thought a lot about living in NZ vs the US, and it's sad to think that because I have cancer I could never really move back to the US if I wanted to. But since I am pretty sure that my family will never move here, we'll always be going back and forth.

Anyways, it was a good movie, and I'm glad we saw it.

Saturday was our trip out of Wellington. We originally were planning on driving north to warmer weather, but since the forecast for the entire island was rain, we decided on someplace closer instead. We ended up going to Cape Palliser, ironically the southern most part of the north island. It was a really nice drive out and sunny when we got there. We saw seals up close, lots of baby lambs bouncing around and went on a tramp to the Putangirua Pinnacles. It was great to get some air and exercise. Here's from the day.

This guy was lounging on the side of the road!

The seals were very inquisitive about people and made the most adorable faces.

Cape Palliser lighthouse.

This house made me smile.

Brian at the base of the pinnacles. This was the weirdest tramp we have been on. The trail is a riverbed, and as you're walking up it you can't help but feel that a wave of water is coming to wash you away any minute.

The pinnacles are supposed to be 7-9 million years old.

On the "trail" there were these cool rocks embedded with fossils everywhere.

Cool piece of driftwood.

Today we're having brunch at Strawberry Fair with some friends we haven't seen in a while. And it looks like the skies might clear for a nice day. Looking forward to it!
