South Island Trip 1

Feb 08, 2008 10:02

Sorry to the people who will see this on missingthebean as well...but here's a recap of our trip to the south island last weekend. Below is a picture of the driving route we took. Because I have so many pictures I have broken this up into 2 posts.

Day 1: We flew into Christchurch early Friday morning and had a sunny, hot day of wandering around and filming in the city. We loved Christchurch! It was much bigger than we thought, and we were happy to see lots of old character buildings that reminded us of Philadelphia. We also drove out to Lyttleton Harbour, then Sumners Beach. On our way back into Christchurch we drove through the Port Hills, but by then it was getting really windy, cool and rainy. We were exhausted by the time we got back, so after dinner we crashed at our hotel for the night.

Christchurch Cathedral in Cathedral Square.

Bridge crossing the Avon River that flows through Christchurch.

Kinetic sculptures outside the art gallery.

Part of a sculpture designed by Richard Taylor of Weta workshop for the outdoor Dyslexia Discovery Exhibit.

A really neat cave you could walk around in at Sumners beach.

A huge sequoia in the middle of Christchurch's Botanic Gardens.

And the rest are pictures from the Botanic Gardens, taken with mom in mind :)

Rose garden.

I was sad that my new camera didn't arrive before we left (and still hasn't arrived!) but my point and shoot still did the job. We also took tons of footage with the video camera and I'm hoping to get some of the clips up on here eventually :)
