Save the NCCC

Feb 07, 2006 16:00

For those of you that don't know, or would like a refresher, I left College in 2003 and joined the AmeriCorps NCCC. A program that had me taking down and Recycling houses in Austin, TX; Working at a Boys & Girls Club in Pine Ridge, SD; A Camp Counselor in Indianapolis, IN; Working Hurricane Francis, Charlie, Ivan and Jeanne Disaster Relief in Fairfax, VA; and Building homes in Santa Fe, NM. It was through the NCCC that I was able to come to my current position.

President Bush's most recent Budget Proposal has slated the NCCC to be cut. That is effectively taking away 1500 adults each year who work for less than minimum wage helping out Non-proftits and Government Organizations with Environmental, Education, Public Safety, and Disaster Relief projects.

If you fundamentaly disagree with the AmeriCorps program than ok. If you like the idea of it, but don't think that is where our Government should be devoting funds, ok. If you do think the Environment, Public Safety, and Education (three areas notoriously underfunded) are worth Tax Dollers than please write your Representatives and Senators, or sign the petition.
