[Title] We Are (More Than?) Best Friends
[Pairing] Kyumin
[Genre] Romance/Fluff
[Rating] PG-13, for Sungmin’s slight potty mouth
[Summary] Kyuhyun is in love with his best friend. His straight and borderline homophobic best friend. Challenge accepted.
[Disclaimer] Inspired in part by a manga entitled ‘Abarenbou Kareshi’, and my unending desire to see Kyuhyun pining over Sungmin for once.
[A/N] I genuinely don’t know if this fic should be taken seriously or not.

*~*~*~*~*~*
  “Kyuhyun.”
‘Ah, I’m glad he hasn’t cut his bangs yet. I hope he doesn’t. He looks so much better with hair falling in his face.’
  “Kyuhyun.”
‘Black really is his color. So is blond. I bet he’d even look good in pink if he tried it… though he’d kill me for saying that. But not that weird orange pumpkin thing he tried. That was just... No.’
“Dammit Cho! I’m talking to you!”
“Ouch! Sungmin what did I tell you about the chest?! It’s a tender area,” Kyuhyun whimpers miserably at Sungmin, while rubbing the spot Sungmin had so mercilessly assaulted. Sungmin only scoffs and rolls his eyes at the pitiful display.
“You were doing that thing with your face again, what’s wrong with you? Need a bathroom?”
“No Minnie, I don’t need a bathr-holy hell that hurts! What was that one for?” Kyuhyun groans in pain as he clutched at his sore shoulder.
“I told you not to call me that!” Sungmin hisses.
“But there’s not even anyone around us,” Kyuhyun complains. “I can feel a bruise coming in already,” Kyuhyun mopes as he rubs at the sore spot. “Did you really need to go all kung pao chicken on me for that? God.”
“Oh, stop being such a baby. I don’t hit you nearly as hard as I could,” Sungmin snorts. “Wait- did you just say ‘kung pao chicken’? You idiot, that’s a food! Can your greedy ass do nothing but think of stuffing your face?!”
“Kung pao chicken, kung fu panda, whatever you wanna call it, it’s all the same pain to me. I’ve told you not to use your fists of fury on me,” Kyuhyun complains.
“And I’ve told you not to call me that name in front of people. You’re lucky I still let you do it at all.”
“That’s cause you secretly like it,” Kyuhyun mutters to himself.
“What?” Sungmin questions sharply, making Kyuhyun’s bruises throb painfully in reflex.
“Nothing, nothing… I just didn’t think you’d be that bothered by it. I didn’t know it embarrassed you so much,” Kyuhyun allows himself to say. Sungmin caught the sadness in his voice before Kyuhyun could even acknowledge it.
“No, Kyu,” Sungmin sighs before turning to stand in front of Kyuhyun, halting their walk.
“It’s not that it embarrasses me, okay? I just- I don’t want anyone starting any crap with me again,” Sungmin says, shifting his eyes around them to make sure their conversation wouldn’t be heard. “I don’t care if it’s just me and you, but others take it the wrong way. They take me the wrong way, and I just don’t want to deal with that.”
“I know, I know. I’m sorry,” Kyuhyun apologizes, looking over at the other and noting the way his eyes were downturned slightly in remorse.    Sungmin was… sensitive about the way Kyuhyun sometimes tended to show him affection, mainly because of all of the crap he had dealt with over the years due to his less than “manly” appearance.
Frankly, Sungmin was adorable, and even though Kyuhyun loved that about him, the other didn't exactly share his enthusiasm. Sungmin had been constantly harassed ever since they were little, and as expected the name calling and bullying took its toll on him. He did everything he could to shake his girly and cute image by taking martial arts lessons and beefing up, dating a different girl every other week, and dislocating a bone-or six-of the guys who used to bother him. He even transferred from the all-boys school that he and Kyuhyun had attended together in favor of a co-ed one in hopes that going to school with actual females would make people stop treating him like one.
“Don’t worry about it. Just… keep it between us alright? I don’t care what you call me when it’s just us two, but out here…” Sungmin trails off, his eyes darting around them as they began walking again.
“I get it. Out here you’re Lee Sungmin, breaker of balls and hearts alike, with a hand as soft as a baby’s bottom until it’s curled in a fist and coming towards your face at 40 miles per hour,” Kyuhyun announces dramatically, causing Sungmin to bite his lip and grin in an attempt to hold back his laughter.
“Where the hell do you come up with this crap?” he asks, looking up at Kyuhyun with an amused twinkle in his eyes.
“I don’t. That’s your fan club hard at work,” Kyuhyun tells him. Sungmin only snickers in response.
“I personally liked the one they came up with at the beginning of the term. It rhymed and everything,” Sungmin chuckls, mentally trying to remember the words.
“That was a good one, though I’m more partial to the chant they have for your martial arts matches,” Kyuhyun says, grinning in response to Sungmin’s grin.
“Those girls may have a bit too much time on their hands,” Sungmin says as he and Kyuhyun round the corner. Kyuhyun looked up, noticing that they were nearly at the street where they had to part ways and unconsciously frowned at the realization.
“Do you want me to wait for you today?” he asks Sungmin. Kyuhyun typically waited for Sungmin after school since the latter was usually busy with after his extracurriculars and Kyuhyun on the other hand, not so much.
“Nah, you can go on ahead. I need to get some more strings for guitar so Jay and I are going to this music store in the city after school,” Sungmin tells him.
“Oh,” was all Kyuhyun could offer. Ever since Sungmin moved schools, he and Kyuhyun had spent less and less time together. He really wished it didn’t bother him as much as it did, but he couldn’t deny the sinking feeling in his chest.
“I’ve been working on this melody I couldn’t get out of my head, and once I get my guitar all fixed up I’ll be over later tonight to play it for you, and you can tell me what you think,” he tells Kyuhyun, as they stopp at the intersection where they had to split.
“Okay,” Kyuhyun replies, feeling a smile tug at his lips in response to the feeling that was suddenly twisting up his insides.
“Great,” Sungmin says while smiling that smile at him. The one that hasn’t changed since childhood and shows the more innocent and genuine side of Sungmin that’s not able to come around so much anymore. It used to upset Kyuhyun how Sungmin seemed to change more and more of the person he had known for the past 10 years, but now Kyuhyun sees that he’s not completely gone, and that he’s still there for Kyuhyun to enjoy from time to time.
He hadn’t told Sungmin exactly how he felt, knowing that the other would only accuse him of being a sap and hit him with one of his breath-stopping punches to the chest. He’d much rather ogle Sungmin discreetly where the only times he had trouble breathing were caused by the more pleasant things Sungmin did, like smiling at him or laughing his light and tinkling laugh. Though, at times like that Kyuhyun often found his inner teenage girl hard to suppress and he’d glomp on Sungmin or pinch his cheeks until he was doubled over in pain and immensely satisfied.
Before Kyuhyun could make a move on him this time though, Sungmin’s eyes flicker away from his face and lock onto something behind him. His smile changes to something resembling a sneer before he looks back at Kyuhyun.
“I think your friends are waiting for you,” he gestures his head to the side and Kyuhyun turns to see his classmates Hyukjae and Donghae looking at them in a way that they wrongly believe to be inconspicuous.
“Sungmin,” Kyuhyun says as a warning, and Sungmin just shrugs.
  “I didn’t say anything.”
“You don’t have to. I can feel you judging them. Don’t,” Kyuhyun frowns.
“I’m not judging. It’s just… do they have to be so obvious?” Sungmin asks as they both turn to look at the way Donghae leans his head on Hyukjae’s shoulder.
  “Sungmin, your intolerance is showing.”
“I’m not intolerant. I’m just saying. As someone who had to deal with homophobic crap when I’m not even gay, I just can’t believe that they’d be so open. I mean they’re practically asking for it,” Sungmin says.
“No one ever ‘asks for it’. You know that better than anyone. I figured you would be more understanding,” Kyuhyun says disappointingly.
“Sorry, sorry. I didn’t mean anything by it Kyu, honest. It’s just a little weird, you know,” Sungmin offers.
“Whatever,” Kyuhyun says dismissively, and Sungmin sighs knowing that he’d upset him.
  “Kyu-“
“I’ve gotta go. I’ll see you later, alright,” Kyuhyun says as he turns around and walks towards Hyukjae and Donghae, completely missing the regretful look that flashes over Sungmin’s face. He watches Kyuhyun’s figure for a while before turning and heading in the direction of his own school.
“Hey Kyu! We saw you talking to Sungmin, anything good to report?” Donghae asks as soon as Kyuhyun nears them, wiggling his eyebrows in an utterly greasy way at the curly-haired teen. Kyuhyun tries to fight off the waves of nausea that hits and pushes the other away by his forehead while grimacing.
“Yeah, we saw you see us talking,” Kyuhyun tells him. “Hey Hyuk,” he greets the other dark-haired boy with them.
“Hey. You okay?” Hyukjae asks, picking up on Kyuhyun’s mood quicker than Kyuhyun had expected.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Just a… misunderstanding between Min and I. Don’t worry about it,” Kyuhyun shrugs it off and starts walking, leaving the other two to follow.
“You should just kiss him and get it over with. I’m sure you’d both feel a lot better if you do. Harboring one-sided loves aren’t healthy you know,” Donghae tells him as he slings an arm over his shoulders.
“You would know all about that, wouldn’t you Hae?” Hyukjae asks, breaking out in laughter at the pouting glare that is directed towards him.
“Hey, I got you in the end didn’t I?” Donghae counters as he briefly breaks away from Kyuhyun to swat at Hyukjae.
“Somehow, I don’t think that solution would benefit either one of us. I’d lose my best friend, and probably the ability to breathe,” Kyuhyun mutters, making Donghae and Hyukjae stop their bickering to look up at him.
“Oh come on. It can’t be that bad,” Hyukjae says. Kyuhyun remembers the look on Sungmin’s face earlier and smiles bitterly.
  “Trust me. It can.”

A/N 2: So, I was not planning on making this so heavy in the first chapter, or at all tbh. So, I’ll probably be keeping the angst to a minimum as much as I can in upcoming chapters, all the while working on my crack writing abilities and my special sense of humor. Don’t worry, I’ll put a warning label up on those chapters ._. And I have no idea why, but writing tenses is giving me a problem. I think I have completely forgotten how to construct a story with correct grammar over the past few months OTL
