Hyukjae sat in his room looking over the papers he had gotten from Jongwoon and reading through all of the duties he had been assigned after he was pretty much forced into joining the student council. He had never had any real interest in joining any kinds of extracurricular activities at school and had planned to go through this year at his new school as undetectable as possible, but it seemed like Heechul had other plans. He just hoped that it wouldn’t be more trouble than it was worth. He sighed as he skimmed over another page, and was interrupted by a light knock on his door.
“Hyukjae?” his mother called, opening the door a little and peeking in.
“Hi mom,” he said, looking at her briefly before going back to his reading.
“How was your first day?” she asked as she sat a cup on his desk.
“It was ok. Nothing too exciting,” Hyukjae shrugged.
“Did you like it? Make any new friends?”
“I… think I did. Oh, I guess I sort of joined the student council,” he said, gesturing to the papers on his desk.
“Really? So quickly? Oh, Hyukjae I’m so proud of you!” she said as she hugged him tightly around his shoulders. “I just knew that this move would be good for us. I’m so happy for you,” she said quietly. Hyukjae lightly returned the hug, missing the warmth and comfort that they had provided.
“Thanks mom,” he said as they broke apart, and she was absolutely beaming, her gums showing in an all too familiar way.
“You must have made quite an impression. And on your first day too.”
“It’s just because I was there and they needed someone. It’s not much deeper than that.”
“Nonsense. It’s because they saw something special in you and they knew that they would regret it if they let you walk away,” his mom said, smoothing his hair down.
“Ok. Sure mom,” Hyukjae said dismissively, embarrassed at having his mom fuss after him like that, but enjoying the fact that she had a reason to smile at him again.
  “I’m serious.”
“Right. I’m sure they took one look at me and thought ‘There! That’s him! The historian we’ve been looking for our whole lives!’” Hyukjae said in mock excitement, earning a tap on his forehead from his mother.
“Well, I’m glad you’re getting involved in something. It’ll be good for you to have something to do besides homework and studying all the time.”
“From what I can see this isn’t much better,” Hyukjae grumbled, and his mom smiled before kissing him on the top of the head.
“Then, I’ll leave you to your work now. Make sure you drink that before it’s not warm anymore,” she said gesturing to the cup on his desk. Hyukjae picked up the cup and took a generous sip from it.
“I can’t wait to tell your father. He’s going to be so excited to hear about this,” she gushed as she turned to exit the room.
“I doubt he’d care,” Hyukjae muttered to himself, unaware that his mom had heard him. She stopped, about to turn around and speak, but chose not to. There was only so many times she could bear to see that look on her son’s face when she tried talking to him about his father. It was an issue that just her words and reassurances would not solve.

The next day, Hyukjae found himself bright and early for the second time, much to his displeasure. He had to meet up with the principal to talk about his first day, and turn in his form for his entrance into the student council, to make it official. He pretty much expected the look of surprise at his acceptance. He had almost the same look on his face, only without his eyebrows jammed into his hairline. Though he didn’t expect the look of exhausted pity directed towards him, or the warning to ‘be careful around Heechul’. Needless to say, he felt more displeased with his forced inclusion into the student council by the time he left his office.
When he arrived to his first class, Sungmin was already there and just as excited to see him as he was yesterday. Hyukjae moved uncomfortably in his seat as Sungmin talked to him, still feeling unfamiliar with him, while the other talked to Hyukjae as if they were old friends. Hyukjae barely spoke, but even if he did have something to say, he wouldn’t have had a chance to get a word in. Sungmin only stopped talking when the teacher walked in and called the class to attention.
When the class let out, Sungmin walked with Hyukjae again, much like yesterday, only when they parted Sungmin called out a ‘see you at lunch’ to Hyukjae, who silently wondered when he would be able to make any decisions on his own in this school. When he walked into his Physics class, he didn’t expect Kyuhyun to behave exactly like Sungmin did and cling to him for the whole hour, but the former barely spoke a word to him. Hyukjae figured it had something to do with the poorly hidden game counsel the other was engrossed in during the whole hour.
He was still diligently playing when Hyukjae was pulled over to their table at lunch. Sungmin must have noticed the incredulous stare Hyukjae was giving him, because he leaned over to speak.
“Kyuhyun and his game unfortunately come as a package. Usually the only thing that can tear him away from the screen is food,” Sungmin said, pushing his tray in front of Kyuhyun who looked up for the first time since he sat down to take a large bite from Sungmin’s tray.
“It’s really unfair how he can do nothing but play and eat all day and still get the highest marks in class and stay as lanky as he is,” Sungmin said with a frown.
“I’d love for him to share his secrets,” Shindong sighed.
“Unfortunately the only one who seems to know the ways of the greedy game addict is Changmin,” Sungmin said as Changmin and Kyuhyun shared eerily similar smirks.
“Well, why share our secrets to the undeserving,” Kyuhyun said, leaning back smugly in his seat.
“My thoughts exactly,” Changmin said, looking the same as he threw an arm around Victoria’s shoulders.
“I don’t see how we put up with you two,” Sungmin said, shaking his head as he tried futilely to take his food back from Kyuhyun.
“I don’t see why we have to put up with you two,” Victoria said, flicking Changmin on the head.
“Because you love us,” Kyuhyun and Changmin chorused.
“Sometimes I wonder,” Victoria said, with a roll of her eyes. “I’ll be back. I need to talk to MiMi about something,” she said as she stood up. Changmin discreetly gave her hand a gentle squeeze before she made her way to a table in the middle of the cafeteria.
Hyukjae glanced at the table and was surprised to see Heechul and Hankyung sitting there. Probably sensing his gaze, Heechul looked up and met Hyukjae’s eyes, staring for a second before smirking and nodding at the other. Hyukjae hesitantly returned the nod before turning back to his table, meeting the curious gazes of the people seated there.
“How do you know the student council president?” Sungmin asked.
“I uh, met him yesterday, when the vice president showed me around.”
“I’m surprised he bothered to greet you. He usually doesn’t bother with anyone who’s not in his clique.” Hyukjae looked back over to the table and saw seven other unfamiliar people sitting down with Heechul and Hankyung. Figuring that was the table where the student council sat he looked around, wondering which one was the last member he had yet to meet.
“I wonder where Jongwoon-sshi is,” Hyukjae said quietly, mostly to himself, when he saw that he was not seated at the table among the others.
“You know him too?” Ryeowook asked.
“Oh, not really. I just saw him when I was in the student council office the other day,” Hyukjae said.
“Ah. Well, he doesn’t sit with Heechul and Hankyung-sshi. None of the student council members really sit together, besides those two. Jongwoon-hyung sits over there with the rest of the theater and choir group,” Ryeowook gestured to a table on the far left of the room, where Hyukjae saw Jongwoon sitting with six other people. Jongwoon had his head back and mouth open in what he assumed to be laughter at something a really tall girl said.
“Jinki,Joohyun Jonghyun, and Sunyoung are some of the best singers in the school. We were all in choir together last year, with Soonkyu and Sooyoung.”
“Why don’t they sit together?” Hyukjae asked, his curiosity getting the better of him.
“They just hang with different crowds,” Sungmin shrugged. “Other than when they are doing stuff for the school, I’ve never really seen them together. Heechul and Hankyung mostly hang with the other seniors over there: Youngwoon, Jungsu, Jaejoong, Sooyeon, Tiffany and Zhou Mi,” Sungmin pointed out.
“Oh,” was all Hyukjae said. They all seemed really friendly with each other to him yesterday, but their tables were almost on opposite sides of the room. He silently glanced around the room, wondering which table housed the last member when he heard Sungmin speak up again.
“Speaking of the student council, I heard that they’re finally going to try and replace Kibum,” Sungmin said.
“Seriously? I thought they’d never fill his spot. Kid’s been gone since the end of last year. I guess this means he’s really not coming back,” Shindong said.
“I still wonder what happened to him,” Sungmin said.
“I heard he was involved in some gang or something and he got into trouble,” Kyuhyun added.
“It could happen,” Changmin said. “He wouldn’t be the first person at this school that happened to. Remember who Youngwoon hyung used to run with before Jungsu hyung got to him?”
“Yeah, but no one’s ever been pulled out of school because of it. I heard he was in the hospital for like 3 weeks,” Sungmin said.
“He hung out with the theater kids though. Did he seem like a thug to you Wookie?”
“Uh, not really. We didn’t hang out that much though,” Ryeowook shrugged, pushing his glasses up.
“I knew there wasn’t something right about him. I always got these really weird vibes from him,” Kyuhyun said.
“But you guys got along pretty well,” Shindong argued.
“That only further proves his point. Ever heard of that ‘birds of a feather’ thing? You see how he and Changmin are practically attached at the hip.” Sungmin said, letting out a high pitched squeak when Kyuhyun pinched his side.
“I wonder who’ll be the unfortunate soul to take his place,” Kyuhyun said.
“Uh, why do you say that?” Hyukjae asked, slightly nervous.
“They’d have to work directly with Heechul. You’re new here, and hopefully you’ll never have to see quite how… intimidating he can be,” Shindong told him.
“Isn’t that term a little loosely applied here? Calling Kim Heechul intimidating is like saying the artic is a little breezy,” Changmin said.
“I can think of a few words other than intimidating that can be used to describe his royal highness,” Kyuhyun said.
“You’d better be careful Kyu. He seriously has ears everywhere,” Sungmin whispered. Kyuhyun only rolled his eyes, not thinking twice about it.
“But seriously, if you can help it, stay out of his way. Life will be so much easier,” Shindong offered. Hyukjae sighed heavily. After his mom’s reaction to him joining, he had been somewhat looking forward to doing it and now he hears this.
  “Something wrong Hyukjae-sshi?” Sungmin asked.
“Not really. Just, I really wish I would’ve heard all of this a day ago.”
  “Why?”
“I was kind of... ‘recruited’ to join,” Hyukjae said, feeling more and more uneasy by the wide-eyed looks that everyone had on their faces.
“Seriously?” Sungmin asked. Hyukjae just made a face and shrugged.
“They’ve been without the last member for months and they just up and pick the new kid? No offense though, Hyukjae,” Kyuhyun said.
  “Some taken,” Hyukjae replied tersely.
“I just meant that it’s a little strange. Out of all of the students who already go here, they picked the new kid, and on his first day? I mean, doesn’t that seem a little odd?”
“Maybe it’s because they couldn’t find anyone else who would willing to be subjected to dealing with Heechul on a weekly basis,” Changmin shrugged. “New kid knows nothing, making him the perfect sucker-I mean candidate, to fill the position.”
Shindong and Sungmin both burst into laughter as Hyukjae chanced a glance at the person they were talking about. He was staring right at them, and Hyukjae jumped a little, catching Heechul’s eyes. He gave the other a sinister looking smile before quickly glancing away, and Hyukjae couldn’t help the small chill that ran up his spine. Why did he get the feeling that Heechul had heard everything that they said?

“Hyukjae-sshi.” Hyukjae turned to the sound of his name and saw Hankyung waving at him as he entered the locker room.
“Looks like we are taking gym class with each other,” he said with a smile.
“I guess so,” Hyukjae said as he took off his shirt so that he could change into his gym uniform. He took his new uniform out of his bag and was about to put on his shirt when he noticed Hankyung staring.
“What is it?” Hyukjae asked with a raised eyebrow.
“What happened?” he asked, pointing to the scar on Hyukjae’s shoulder. The dull ache that he felt had nothing to do with the physical wound.
“… A big mistake,” was all Hyukjae could afford as he quickly slid into his shirt and pulled his shorts on. Hankyung seemed to sense his reluctance to talk about it so he didn’t ask anything more and started to change himself.
Hyukjae shoved his gym bag into his locker, and just as he went to close his he saw Hankyung pulling his gym shirt on, but not before Hyukjae could see the huge white bandage that covered most of the top right of Hankyung’s back. Hyukjae’s eyes widened, a strange feeling tightening its way around his chest, but as soon as he blinked, it was gone and Hankyung was already changed.       He proceeded to zip his bag up and put it into his locker, before turning and smiling at a still shell-shocked Hyukjae.
  “Ready?” he asked, all smiles.
“Uh,” Hyukjae figured it would be a bit rude to ask Hankyung what was up with the huge bandage on his back, especially after he had been so reluctant to talk about what had happened with him, so he just shook of the thought. “Yeah, sure,” he said slowly, following Hankyung out of the locker room.
The more time Hyukjae spent with these people, the more he felt like he should stay away from them.

A/N: So, I can take a small break from my hiatus to post since I'm on Spring Break ^^;
  I'm so painfully hopeless OTL

I just used everyone’s real names (except for Shindong-mostly cause I forgot-and Tiffany, just cause I like Tiffany better than Stephanie ._.). Most of them are obvious but for the two that I think you might not be that familiar with; Sunyoung = Luna & Sooyeon = Jessica.
Mainly this chapter has more weird stuff and mysteries that you all are confused about and I am sitting back and grinning about, but it’s all important… so you should keep your eyes open for clues and whatnots…
BUUTTT… Donghae is coming soon… most likely in the next chapter so… yeah, there’s that to look forward to. You know, if you’re not bored with this already ._.
