Donghae sat across from Hyukjae in the library, at the same table they had been occupying for the past two weeks. He watched Hyukjae read over the second draft of their paper, a stick of Pocky between his lips. He had developed a new love for the treat from Kyuhyun.
The younger had taken a liking to Hyukjae, and enjoyed teasing both him and Donghae whenever they came to the library. And they also had math together, since Kyuhyun was a genius and skipped two grades-- his words-- and they had grown close pretty quickly. Donghae pouted thinking of how close the two had become.
“Hyukkie,” he whined. Hyukjae looked up and Donghae could see the question in his eyes. “You can’t let Kyuhyun come over here when we’re working on our project anymore.”
“Why?” He munched a little of his Pocky stick.
“Because…” Donghae hadn’t actually thought of a real reason. He just didn’t like that he had spent so much time with them, when it was just supposed to be the two of them together.
“Because?” Hyukjae pressed.
“He’s… distracting,” Donghae lamely came up with.
“How? He’s the reason we are as far as we are now,” Hyukjae was confused.
Donghae sighed and leaned over the desk until he was right in front of Hyukjae face. He saw the familiar blush spreading on his cheeks and smiled. Hyukjae still hadn’t gotten used to Donghae’s skinship.
“He’s distracting you from me,” Donghae said, watching as Hyukjae’s eyes widened behind his glasses. So cute, he thought with a smile.
“D-dong…hae… What…” Hyukjae mumbled around the stick still between his lips. Donghae eyes suddenly sparked as his smile turned into a grin.
“He’s even got you picking up his habits,” he said, leaning closer and opening his mouth to accept the other end of the stick from Hyukjae.
Hyukjae was rigid in his seat as Donghae’s face came closer than ever and he could feel the heat from his face on his. He quickly shut his eyes and he felt the stick move in his mouth from Donghae’s movement. Donghae bit off his end and pulled back, pulling his end into his mouth and eating it.
Hyukjae’s eyes flew open when he felt Donghae move away from him, his heart beating so fast he felt his body rocking form its movements.
“Next thing I know, you’ll be ditching me to go play video games,” Donghae said, unfairly unaffected.
He’s really trying to kill me, Hyukjae thought as he slammed his head on the desk. Donghae, of course rushed to his side to ask him what was wrong.
Hyukjae had to spend their last fifteen minutes together persuading Donghae that he was not sick or exhausted from hunger (Donghae still insists that Hyukjae does not eat enough). Donghae begrudgingly got up to leave Hyukjae and went to his class. Hyukjae watched him walk away throwing a few looks back to make sure Hyukjae was okay like he said. He waited until he was out of sight and sighed heavily. He started to pack up his and was about to put back the books he and Donghae had been looking through. He walked up to the front desk and placed his stack of books in front of his new gamer friend.
“Here Kyu-ah. Thanks again for the help,” he said. Kyuhyun looked up from his game and saw the dejected look on his face.
“What’s wrong hyung?” he asked, taking the books from him and placing them on his side of the desk.
“Nothing,” he gave a smile small to reassure him, but it only made it worse.
“Is it Donghae?” Kyuhyun asked, though he already knew the answer.
Hyukjae bit his lip, deciding whether or not he should tell him, and decided against it.
“No, I’m fine Kyu-ah. Thanks anyway,” he said and moved to walk away.
“Hyung,” Hyukjae turned around and looked at Kyuhyun. “He’ll figure it out sooner or later.”
“I hope not,” Hyukjae said, thinking that Kyuhyun meant Donghae would find out his feelings for him. The last thing he wanted was for Donghae to know that the crush he had developed had turned into something more. He turned to go to his class before he was late.
Donghae stood up eagerly as the bell rang, eager to check on Hyukjae. Jessica watched him from her seat beside him.
“Oppa, what’s the hurry?”
“I want to check on Hyukjae, I don’t think he was feeling too well when I left him after lunch.”
“You’ve been spending lunch time with Hyukjae?” she said, working hard to conceal the malice in her voice. “I thought you were working on a project.”
“Yeah, and Hyukkie’s my partner.” He grabbed his folders and she followed him out the door.
“’Hyukkie’?” she asked, disgust coloring her tone.
Donghae smiled sweetly at her and her heart sped up slightly at the sight. “It’s the nickname I gave him. Cute, right?” Her eyes narrowed by the time he finished his sentence.
“N-“ Before she could finish Siwon had spotted Donghae and called out to him.
“Donghae.”
“Siwon, what’s up?”
“I’m here to get you for practice.”
“But it’s Wednesday.” Usually practice was only on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“We have a tournament coming up and we're going to have extra practice for the next week, so we’ll practice during the last 2 hours of class and a few hours before and after school.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, all the teachers already know and you’re excused from class, so come on.” Siwon gestured for him to follow him.
“Wait, I have to tell Hyukjae not to wait for me after school. It’s supposed to rain later,” he said, getting ready to pull out his phone. Jessica placed a hand on his arm to stop him.
“Ah, I’ll tell him oppa. Don’t worry,” Jessica smiled sweetly at him and he nodded.
“Thanks Jessica. I owe you one,” he said smiling and following after Siwon.
“I’ll hold you to that,” she said, her smile quickly turning into a smirk. She whipped out her cell phone and sent a text, still smirking as she made her way to class.
Hyukjae walked to Donghae’s locker, wondering why the latter had missed their math class. It was Wednesday so he knew he didn’t have practice today. He stood in front of his locker, feeling a little silly waiting in front of his locker like he was his girlfriend or something. Just as he was deciding to just go to the front of the school and wait, he heard someone clear their throat behind him. He turned to the side and saw Jessica and Yuri standing next to him.
“Excuse me, but I need to get into Donghae oppa’s locker,” she said, her face polite, but her tone sharp.
“Oh, sorry,” Hyukjae said, quickly moving out of the way.
He really didn’t want to ask Jessica but, he guessed that since Jessica was getting something for him, she knew where Donghae was. “Um…” he started, shrinking back when she looked directly at him, one perfectly arched eyebrow raised in annoyance.
“What?”
“Do you… uh, know… where D-donghae is?” he managed to get out. She smiled, one that made Hyukjae shift uncomfortably.
“Yes, he’s waiting for me right now actually. We have somewhere to go. Why? Do you need me to tell him something?” Hyukjae’s eyes widened. Donghae hadn’t mentioned anything about plans with Jessica.
“Oh, n-no. That’s ok. Thanks,” he said, turning around to leave.
When he was out of ear shot Jessica turned to Yuri. “For a nerd, he’s really stupid,” she said, laughing darkly.
Hyukjae had walked out of the building and had started to make his way home when he stopped. Something told him to text Donghae, just in case.
To: Donghae
From: Hyukjae
Are you busy?
---
Almost five minutes passed before he received a reply.
To: Hyukkie
From: Hae
Yeah, didn’t Jessica tell you?
---
Hyukjae stared at the screen, barely registering when a few drops of moisture had made their way onto the screen. He wasn’t surprised that the two had gotten together. He knew it was only a matter of time, but he was surprised that it hurt so much.
He watched as the drops on his screen increased in quantity and it took him a minute to realize that he was wet too. He looked up as the rain began to fall harder. He almost wanted to laugh at the coincidence of it all. But, then again he had never known it to be a sunny day when someone got their heart broken.
He walked home slowly, each step feeling like he was stepping on broken glass. His arms swung painfully from side to side and every rain drop that landed on his head felt like it weighed a thousand pounds.
The next morning Hyukjae ran to school. He had foolishly let himself hope, and he waited for Donghae to come and get him like he had every morning. It was only when it was ten minutes to when their first class started did it sink in that he wasn’t coming. He ran into the school, panting heavily and his chest on fire, but the latter was not from the lack of air in his lungs. He had started to slow down his run when he started to feel dizzy and his head started pounding, but he had caught sight of the clock on the wall and decided to keep running.
He had just rounded the corner when he collided with the last person he had wanted to see.
“Why don’t you watch where you’re going!” Jessica shouted, standing up and dusting off her skirt.
“Sorry,” Hyukjae mumbled quickly. He leaned down to pick up the paper she dropped and she snatched it from him. She stared at him hard in the face her frown turning to a look of surprise.
“Oh my god, have you been crying?” she asked eyeing his swollen red eyes and letting a snicker out, before it turned into a full on cackle. “You know, you shouldn’t be sad over not having something you never had any chance of getting on the first place. You’re pathetic. I wonder why Donghae oppa even likes someone like you.”
Maybe it was the lack of sleep that had Hyukjae a little less composed than usual, but he found himself speaking before he could stop himself.
“And I wonder why he likes someone like you,” he said under his breath.
“What did you just say?” her eyes narrowing dangerously. “Don’t you dare think that you can talk to me anyway you want, nerd!” she yelled, raising her hand to smack Hyukjae. He shut his eyes and flinched back, waiting for the connection.
“Now does that really seem like a good idea?” Hyukjae opened his eyes at the unfamiliar hard voice and saw Lee Sungmin, captain of their school’s martial arts club with his hand firmly around Jessica’s wrist.
“Let me go!” She pulled against his hold and he let her go, watching as she stumbled backwards.
“I don’t hit girls…” he started, looking dangerously at her, “but try something like that again and I will make an exception.” Her eyes widened and she backed away.
“J-just try it!” she yelled, when she had made it a safe distance away. “I’ll have you kicked out in a second!” she threatened.
Sungmin just shook his head and turned his head to the still shocked Hyukjae. “You okay, Hyukjae-sshi?” he asked.
“Uh, yes, thank you. But, how do you know my name?” Hyukjae asked.
“It’s hard not to know the guy my boyfriend is always talking about,” Sungmin smiled warmly at him.
“Me?” Hyukjae asked in surprise.
“Yeah, it’s rare for Kyuhyun to talk about anything but games, but he’s mentioned you quite a few times. I’m starting to get a little jealous,” Sungmin joked.
“Kyuhyun? Oh, we’re just friends. That's all,” Hyukjae said quickly, not wanting an angry martial artist to think he’s after his boyfriend. Sungmin just laughed.
“I was just joking. It’s fine," Sungmin's smile faded and a concerned look crossed his features. "Hey, are you sure you’re okay? You look kind of red,” Sungmin asked reaching over to place a hand on his forehead. “You’re really warm,” Sungmin said, alarmed. “Do you need to go to the nurse?”
“No, I’m fine,” he said, but his head started spinning again and he had to lean on the wall for support.
“Hyukjae?!” Sungmin calling is name was the last thing he heard before everything went dark.

Pocky is, right? Sorry for the slow update, but I’m really swamped with school. I will be free for the summer after the 26th, and my professors are not letting me off easy so I don’t know if I will be able to update before then. And... yeah, I’m sorry about Jessica… again... but…. Uh…. Oh! Look, it’s Sungmin!!
