Right now as you are sitting at your computers in your safe homes some one just like you, 19 or 20 years old, is being shot at, maybe killed in Iraq. They aren't going to be able to kiss some one they love , write a letter, get married, have kids, they aren't even going to be able to check their livejournal something you're doing right now, ( Read more... )

This is completely useless. I'm sure this isn't your exact sentiment, but the fact that it's here says enough. It's very depressing and sad that kids our age are fighting pointless wars, wars they may or may not believe in, witnessing travesties most of us will never have to suffer. It's sad that they die for someone else's idea. But as far as I know, there is still such a thing as free will in America, and the fact remains that he entered the service by choice. If he hadn't, then he would probably be doing the same things as all of us - watching television, drinking with his friends, working a crappy job, maybe getting frustrated over girls ( ... )

I think you (more eloquently) expressed something similar to what I was feeling. But, I still find it pathetic that people like you and i are aware of all of this, the genocide, the hunger, the pointless war, etc. and we are completely apathetic to it. We are educated, we are aware, we know what is happening and yet we do nothing, like i said we are so wrapped up in our inane little existences. Our troubles and fears don’t seem invalidated but more overshadowed in comparison to something like a daily struggle for food or to stay alive.

How do you suggest we become more involved? Truly, I would like to, but my resources are slim. I don't turn the other cheek everytime something bad happens, like many others do. I think that's not only pathetic, but ignorant. People who have the power and the money and who are not using it, are also pathetic. People like us have time and effort to contribute yes, and I think that we should moreso than we do. I don't think we're completely ambivalent to suffering and annihilation, but I agree with you we aren't doing enough. The problem with contributing to a cause is putting it in perspective, and I think the prevalence of widespread social ills makes it difficult for us to maintain optimism when trying to benefit cultures stricken by poverty, war, and disease. As humans we have a great emotional capacity to feel compassion towards our fellow man. I think I'm rambling a bit here... overall I'm confident we share the same sentiment, I'm just wary to overgeneralize apathy as "pathetic." I don't think this is the typical nature of man, ( ... )
