Outside, it’s the end of the world.
Scully can feel it crashing down. Her eyes are drawn repeatedly back to the window; a curtain partially covers it.
He can feel her drifting.
Her uncertainty.
Her fear.
The overwhelming desire she has to get up from this Motel 6 bed and bring their son home --
...Where ever he is...
--So strong a pull, she resists only by lying perfectly still, letting her eyes drift up and out.
Mulder tightens his grip around her hip.
She notices only somewhat.
The time of speeches is over now so he says nothing, hoping that his presence alone is enough to ground her.
But her eyes continue to drift.
He can’t ask her if this is what she wants because obviously it’s not, or if she’s happy because -- God -- he can’t bare the real answer.
“It’s only the beginning...” she mutters half asleep.
Her eyes are drifting shut now and the vice grip he has on her hip relaxes somewhat.
Mulder, still quiet, watches her fall asleep and relaxes into the rhythms of her breath.
His eyes dance around her face and drift to the mirror by the wall and watches outside--
Where it ends.
