Saw The Place Beyond the Pines today, it was really quite stunning. It had some brilliant commentary on the illogics of masculinity and machoism in it (I have never seen so many men cry in a movie it was the bestest thing ever WE NEED MORE OF THIS HOLLYWOOD), I thought also that it made some subtle points about the stupidity of human beings when they feel they are motivated by a just cause.
It was all about the stupidity of the notion of a just cause maybe... Or maybe I projected that onto it. It was about so many different things really but coherent for that.
The music was top notch they used alot of Arvo Part just like every other film in existence but they did it perfectly, it didn't create drama or beauty but supported it, then the bits of original score they used were unlike other pieces of movie music in that they had these really esoteric synths.
The music and the visuals were atmospheric in combination.
I will be going to see that film again that's for damn sure.
Ryan Gosling is terribly pretty in it - those lashed blue eyes all sheeny shiny with tears.
It made me want to watch old Ryan Gosling films that I loved which was somehow how I found myself on Tumblr stealing Murder by Numbers gifs.
Now Murder by Numbers isn't as good a film but fuck it's homoerotic and pretty too.
There is so much scope in it for the sort of dubious consent, dark, intense sort of fic I like.
