Satellite of Love mechanics preview: KEYS

Sep 29, 2011 13:20

In many role-playing games, a key is a trait which rewards your character for acting in an interesting and idiomatic way. In Satellite of Love, your game piece will have keys, but they work a little differently. Keys are ways in which you want other pieces to interact with your piece, rather than ways in which you yourself act.

A SoL key has a principle, which is why you have it, what thing about you that makes it true; a harmony rule, which is a way others can interact with you to support it; and a discord rule, which is a way others can interact with you to undermine your key. When someone triggers your harmony rule, you get an experience point and they get a harmony point. When someone triggers your discord rule, you get an experience point and they get a discord point.

Keep track of your points with tokens of three different colors, such as poker chips. Later, you can spend these points to strengthen your character, or to help or screw over others.

Here's an example …
I blame my nation's feudal overlords for all of its ills. When an aristocrat exploits his power to do me wrong, I get +experience and they get +harmony. When I see an aristocrat leverage his power to bring justice, I get +experience and they get +discord.
