Completely independent of my influence, the Afro-Latin Week committee hired Chicago, one of Mestre João Grande's best American students, to teach a Capoeira Angola workshop last night. I managed to press gang davidrosen, appending_doom, and a couple of players from the weekly Capoeira club into going. It felt really good to get into my Angola "uniform" (or what passes for one in João Grande's parts: shoes, academy t-shirt, and khakis, cap optional) again. Chicago was, as usual, hilarious, and his kids were, as usual, adorable; and although I wish I could have seen more people there, it was nice to see some new faces whom I can press gang into coming every week.

So maybe I'm new to Capoeira Angola, but it was still satisfying to tell people, you should come and meet Chicago, we train with the same master, he's my style brother. I doubt the guy will remember my name until the next time I see him, but it's still really satisfying to know that we have this culture that we chose and we share. I don't get that feeling anywhere else, not even with my family. I've been wondering for a while recently on the fact that I haven't got a culture that I can call home, and how I tend to latch on to constructed cultures, mishmashes of heroes and symbols and history, in lieu of my own. I've got to get to dinner now but more on this later.
