Lex had stopped living his life as a story a long time ago, but comic book heroes always has someone to love and who loves them back -whether they be alive or dead- for them to take that one extra step to become extraordinary. It was a small thing to want, that distinction in his mind between heroes and villians, selfless and selfish. Even if she didn't loved him completely, even if another could loved her better, if he loved her enough to bridge that gap it would be all the reason he needed. Someone precious to make him strong.
