Chemistry Paper

I've had my fill of chemistry, and therefore am submitting this paper in response to: "Write a 1-page paper on what you learned in Chem 125 Lab"...

“What I Learned In Chemistry 125”

If you expected this essay to include a whole mess of chemistry terms, vague concepts, and other incoherent nonsense, you are mistaken mein Freund. That would be fraudulent, for I truly haven’t learned any chemistry from Dr. Deutsch’s drool-inducing banter; I did, however, learn much about life, what’s important in life, and what you need to do to “get by.” I took AP Chemistry back in my junior year of high school (and actually enjoyed it, too) and luckily received college credit for Chem I, its lab, and Chem II. Unfortunately this did not include Chem II lab, so I involuntarily signed up to take such an insignificant course (needed for my B.S. in biology). I hadn’t met Dr. Deutsch prior to, but had heard a plethora of negative things about him from other students and colleagues alike. They were all right nevertheless, for he truly is ridiculous.

I put some effort into the course at the beginning and kept up with the labs like every other suffering student. But soon it became unreasonably demanding for a 1-credit course so like many of my peers, I naturally stopped trying. At the time I was dealing with my father’s illness on top of everything else in my life; he had been suffering from vicious osteosarcoma on the right side of his face for 4 years, and in February his condition had been worsening. The tumor even closed off his throat and he needed an emergency tracheostomy so he could breathe… I simply didn’t have time to deal with the bullshit that Chem 125 lab presented each week. Pre-lab lectures? Give me a fucking break. My world came crashing down on March 2nd when my father passed away; at that point I took two weeks off from classes, then somehow, half-heartedly, trudged my way back into academics. I wasn’t ready and still am not ready… this semester truly couldn’t end soon enough.

I don’t pay attention to anything, simply because I don’t care about it - especially Chem 125. It’s a joke, really…just like Dr. Deutsch. You cannot deny that he is an intelligent man when it comes to his chemicals. And if I needed someone to titrate 'homogeneous' solutions for me then I might hire him, but where does SUNY Geneseo get off employing someone who tells a student “they don’t belong in college” because they didn’t know what ‘Nota Bene’ meant? The man is definitely not qualified to teach, especially with such a calloused, drunken demeanor and his unbearable pomposity. Check www.ratemyprofessors.com for his rating - it’s a pretty accurate representation of his teaching capabilities. Perhaps he should pack his bags and go teach wildebeests the marvels of the “invert and swirl” method. I don’t care either way, but I do hope for the wellbeing of Geneseo, all the chemistry majors, and the entire chemistry department that he is fired sometime soon.

Throughout this year of college I’ve realized there’s a certain way to get things done. Chemistry 125 has truly served as a learning tool - I’ve realized what is truly most important in life, and I have lost what is most important to me in the process. If you are ever so unfortunate to have Dr. Deutsch, I would recommend finding a better-qualified instructor. Nietzche was a true German, and he said “God is dead.” He’s right.

They can't touch me.
