The Fourth of July, a spectacular evening with Jes... couldn't ask for more.
A rustle in the underbrush makes us both jump. "What the hell was that!?," she asks, with a sense of panic in her voice. "It's nothing, let's keep going, " I reply, as we walk faster down the trail. It was my idea to come this way... we should have stayed on the main trail. Absolute darkness is upon us. Nothing is visible, except for a barely perceivable, untrodden path which lies before us - engulfed by looming trees, maddening darkness and the ominous unknown. I wanted to hide from the fear, from the actual truth... something lurks within the shadows. It's been following us ever since the bridge, I can sense its damning presence. A chill runs through my body, our hands grasping each other tightly. Dear God, walk faster...
We reach what appears to be a break in the trail. No, not a break, as the southern path vanishes and breaks into the foliage of the forest. We must take the north trail. She pauses, clutching my arm, "I don't think I can continue." Staring hard into the darkness, I can see tears welling up in her eyes. We embrace. A warmth digs inside me, past the fear... a subconscious feeling of attachment grips me as I hold her, quivering in my arms.
We proceed down the twisted path, ducking underneath branches and stepping over fallen trees. It seems like we've been walking forever, endlessly. I sense it lurking behind us again, hunting us like prey. Suddenly, the eerie silence is broken by a twig snapping in the immediacy. We pause, our hearts racing. Gazing into blackness, a creature bellows a low, dreadful sound, far worse than any human could ever comprehend... Stricken with utter fear, we begin to walk backwards, away from the source. After about 10 paces down the trail, we are greeted with foreboding silence. The wind blows slightly, causing leaves to become restless. I reach out... our hands meet for one last time. Pulses racing, senses on full alert, adrenaline rushing through our veins. "Run," I whisper, releasing the grasp.
She tears off into the darkness, and I listen as her footsteps begin to fade away in the distance. Ahead of me, red glowing eyes emerge from the darkness. I stand there for a moment, frozen in sheer terror, clutching the knife in my perspiring palms. Without hesitation, I turn around abruptly and flee down the winding path. The beast is trampling behind me, I can hear the rhythmic pants escaping from its throat. Waiting near ahead, she feels the ground slightly shaking beneath her feet. The vibrations become more intense, they are approaching with unearthly haste.
Then comes the sickening silence... complete and utter throughout. Alone and panic-stricken, she retraces the path. Step by careful step, she proceeds slowly with absolute silence. Another gust of wind. She brushes the hair out of her face, a chill runs throughout her body. Clutching the coat for warmth, she quickens her pace.
She catches a glimpse of a lustrous object embedded in the earth. Coming closer to it, a weak cry escapes her lips... It's his knife. Examining it in her hands, a dark fluid drips onto her index finger. Blood. A moment of hysteria grips her emotions, she screams out his name, echoing throughout the dead of the night. She screams again, no response... Her eyes begin to tear up. Gripped with despair, she falls to the ground, sobbing profusely. She lays there, curled into the fetal position, clutching herself, trying to retain sanity... A noise. Unraveling with a jolt, she becomes dead silent. Barely moving, she peers into the surrounding forest... a colossal shadow loomed, fifty meters to the north.
Hunched on all fours, she begins to crawl backwards, endeavoring to remain unnoticed. She inches herself backwards, more and more, astray from the trail and deeper into the bowels of the forest. She crouches low, the smell of moist soil and decayed plant-matter fill her nose. Above, a break in the clouds sends moonlight streaming down, partially illuminating the surface. To the north, the creature is no longer visible. Something catches her eye. A body, lying a few meters to the west...
Drawing nearer, she begins to convulse. "Oh dear God..." It was him. His clothes, tattered and blood-soaked, concealing lacerations across his chest. Extending her hand, she checks under his neck for a pulse. That's when she sees it. The front of his neck is slashed open... blood pouring out, collecting in a pool beneath his head. He feels cold, yet there's a pulse, a weak one amongst his unconscious body. With tears streaming down, she gently touches him. His eyes open.
My eyes open. I can see her face in the moonlight. She speaks softly to me... I have to tell her. I attempt to speak, nothing comes out. The pain... my throat... it feels like I'm choking... I'm drowning... the excruciating pain. How bad is it, can I make it? Please, tell me... Dear Christ, tell me. My body is numb... I'm cold... I feel the blood trickling down into my lungs. Life is slipping away... Please help me, I don't want to die here, not tonight...
She watches as his eyes close upon tears. The weak pulse in the hand she holds is no more. "No...don't go..." she whimpers, clutching and embracing his cold body. She lays there, unaware of the approaching danger. Teeth sinking into her skull, she screams in agony...
She awakens with a jolt, finding herself in a cold sweat. A moment passes before she realizes that they're in the car. She rests her head on his shoulder, closing her eyes and entering an illusive world of dreams.
